When the dust settled from Friday night’s action, 22 of the 80 teams ranked between 4A-1 and 1A-2 took losses. Some don’t qualify as upsets – 11 losses came to teams that are ranked and/or play in higher classifications – but those losses meant extra work for the voters as they submit their newest rankings.

The only class to make it through the weekend unscathed? 1A-2, where Balmorhea, Jayton, Strawn, Blackwell, Motley County and Oakwood all found the win column.

The carnage proved particularly rough in 4A-2 and 3A-2, where both top ranked teams lost. In fact, 4A-2 saw six of its 10 ranked teams lose. In 3A-2, the top three teams all lost.

Texarkana Pleasant Grove dropped a 52-41 decision to Argyle, ranked No. 2 in 4A-1. Argyle’s CJ Rodgers threw five touchdown passes against Pleasant Grove’s defense, three to Cole Kirkpatrick. Argyle led 42-20 before the Hawks’ furious fourth-quarter rally fell short. Argyle’s won 48 straight regular season games.

No. 6 Graham (19-14 loss to unranked Springtown), No. 7 Waco Connally (13-10 loss to 4A-1 No. 1 Waco La Vega) and No. 10 Celina (10-7 loss to unranked Paris) all lost one-score games.

Gunter, the top-ranked team in 3A-2, came up short on the road against Pottsboro, ranked No. 3 in 3A-1 after a run to the state finals last year. Pottsboro set the tone in what would be a 34-21 win early when Brayden Plyler found Landon Dunaway for a touchdown on fourth and goal. The Cardinals never trailed, and Gunter couldn’t overcome a 20-0 deficit.

No. 2 Canadian got off to a fast start at Iowa Park, leading 21-0. But Iowa Park closed fast, outscoring Canadian 28-0 down the stretch. Cirby Coheley found Kade Thomas alone behind Canadian’s secondary for a 65-yard score that proved to be the winner.

A week after allowing 62 points in a win over Center, Tatum’s defense led the way in a 17-8 win over No. 3 Daingerfield. The Eagles sacked Daingerfield quarterback Zaylon Jeter for two big losses and intercepted him once while keeping the Tigers off the board in the second half.
