Brownwood: The Lions are a team that’s playing a bunch of sophomores and was without head coach Sammy Burnett on the sidelines Friday night, but bounced back from a season opening loss with an impressive 35-15 win over Midland Greenwood. Brownwood’s resume looks much better now considering how tough they played Lampasas for a half two weeks ago, while district rival Stephenville was shut out by the Badgers 41-0 on Friday night.
Stock Down
Needville: The Blue Jays narrowly escaped a major upset to open the season with a one point win over Livingston. But they weren’t as lucky last week as NHS fell to 1-1 on the season after a 20-14 loss to Huffman on Friday night. Had it not been for some late game heroics in the opener, Needville would looking at an 0-2 start.

Iowa Park: The Hawks, who were regional champions in 2018 and regional finalists in 2019, were overlooked by most when picking the Region I race. But overlooked they’ll be no more as Iowa Park leaps into the 4A-Division II state rankings after a 28-21 win over powerhouse Canadian. Iowa Park fell behind 21-0 before rallying for four straight touchdowns and the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Stock Down
Graham: Iowa Park’s district rival didn’t fare as well Friday night dropping a 19-14 decision to a Springtown team that had lost the week before to Glen Rose. To compound matters a bit more, Graham’s season opening blowout win over Alvarado doesn’t look as good either considering Alvarado is 0-2 after dropping a 47-0 decision to Decatur on Friday night.

Comfort: After a big season in 2019 in 3A-Division II, many thought the Bobcats would take a step back in 2020 with the move to Division I. But that hasn’t been the case through two weeks. Comfort improved to 2-0 with a dominating 30-6 win over Mason. We’ll know what Comfort really has the next two weeks as it takes on a tough Marion squad next week and then Uvalde (4A); both games on the road.
Stock Down
Atlanta: The Rabbits fell to 0-2 on the season and were drilled Friday night by Omaha Pewitt, 40-21. The Brahmas are an elite 3A-Division II outfit no doubt, but the 19-point loss looks worse considering this was Pewitt’s season opener after being forced to cancel their original season opener due to Covid-19 protocols.

Queen City: The Bulldogs, who broke a 26-game losing streak in Week 1, decided to make it two in a row with an 18-14 win over Union Grove on Friday night. Queen City isn’t thinking playoffs just yet in their tough district, but its clear this is a much-improved team.
Stock Down
Clifton: The Cubs, who have made back to back area round playoff runs, have stumbled out of the gate in 2020 falling to 0-2 after a 17-10 loss to Little River-Academy. Clifton’s defense has been solid in the early going, but averaging just 12 points per game isn’t going to cut it for the Cubs, who play in a tough 13-3A Division II.

Rio Vista: After going 2-8 in Kasey Black’s first season, the Eagles had hopes of improvement in 2020 with a veteran squad returning and a drop to Class 2A. That hope is now becoming reality as RVHS equaled their 2019 win total on Friday to go to 2-0 with a 35-14 win over Granger. The Eagles rolled up 413 yards of offense and held Granger to -10 yards on the ground to dominate from start to finish. This is a team that could compete for a playoff spot in 2020 if it keeps improving.
Stock Down
Alto: After a blistering 2019 season in which Alto posted an 11-1 mark, the Yellow Jackets had some high hopes and expectations for another big season in 2020. But the ‘Jackets are off to a rocky start at 0-2 after getting drubbed by Timpson, 48-6. Alto has been outscored 75-6 in two games to open the 2020 season.

Wellington: The Skyrockets weren’t able to play a regular season game in Week 1 as they were unable to find an opponent. Instead they had to scrimmage in Oklahoma and wait for a Week 2 game against 2A-Division I and state-ranked New Deal. No problem for Gary Proffitt’s squad as Wellington looked sharp early with an impressive 22-14 win over a New Deal squad that already had a game under their belt.
Stock Down
Burton: The Panthers have absolutely come out of the gate stumbling in a big way and some major red flags are flying. The opening loss to Holland is excusable; the Hornets were a regional finalist in Division I a year ago. But a 14-0 loss to Runge, a team that was 2-9 last year and 3-8 the year before, is a major warning sign that this could be a down year for Burton.
