Consistency and opportunity were a few of the factors that went into the UTSA commitment for Houston Heights 2021 CB Brian Mayes (6'1, 175)

Now, as he heads into his final year, he looks to continue to show the UTSA coaches that he is precisely what they want.

"I committed to UTSA on April 18. The coaches consistently kept in contact with me, and I felt the love," Mayes said. "That was the main thing, constantly reaching out and checking on me. They said that I could start off on special teams and get me in at cornerback too. They like that I am a lockdown, island corner who is physical at the line."

Mayes admits he still needs to get a closer look at all UTSA offers, and the Houston-area standout plans to do that when the NCAA allows on-campus visits.

In the meantime, Mayes and his teammates are gearing up for the 2020 season.

After finishing 4-7 with a first-round playoff loss, Mayes wants to turn the tides for his final run. He has seen a change of attitude during pre-season workouts.

"We are more focused. It seems like last year we were half in and half out," Mayes said. "We have to do better than last year. Everyone must have the same goal. I know for me, I need to provide more leadership and uplift. And I have to keep making plays."

Mayes recorded around 30 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and four interceptions as a junior in 2019.
