Welcome to TXHSFB Inside The Numbers, a weekly look at Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s comprehensive computer rankings. Each week, we’ll take a deep dive into that week’s Texas high school football computer rankings to separate the signal from the noise.

CLASS 6A and CLASS 5A

Nothing to see here. The state’s two largest classifications don’t start practice until next week, and won’t play games until September 24 at the earliest – that’s Week 5. So we’re in a holding pattern here.

CLASS 4A

At The Top… In Division I, the computer really liked what Argyle did to Decatur, vaulting the Eagles to the No. 1 spot over La Vega despite the Pirates’ win over Calhoun. Dumas made a leap up to the top four from No. 8, and Melissa vaulted into the top 10 with their win over Sunnyvale. Division II’s a little more steady, but Waco Connally’s win over Sunnyvale has the computer loving the Cadets, up to No. 6 from No. 15.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DI No. 33 Terrell (beat Wills Point 59-0, up 41 spots from No. 74)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DII No. 85 Wills Point (lost to Terrell 59-0, down 37 spots from No. 48)

Projected Title Games Right Now…

DIVISION I: Argyle over Lampasas by 5 (last week: Waco La Vega over Lampasas by 2)

DIVISION II: Carthage over Pleasant Grove by 2 (unchanged from last week)

CLASS 3A

At The Top… In Division I, Wall’s statement win over Eastland turned the computer’s digital head around, vaulting them up to No. 2, while Cameron Yoe, Shallowater and Lorena all jumped into the top 10 thanks to wins over Mexia, Abernathy and Franklin, respectively. In Division II, Canadian edged out Gunter for the No. 1 spot after a throttling of Stinnett West Texas, but Spearman was the big mover, up to No. 9 from No. 37 after a stunning beatdown of state-ranked Stratford.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 9 Spearman (beat Stratford 42-6, up 28 spots from No. 37)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DI No. 58 Fairfield (lost to Rusk 42-14, down 34 spots from No. 24)

Projected Title Games Right Now…

DIVISION I: Brock over Rockdale by 12 (last week: Brock over Rockdale by 9)

DIVISION II: Canadian over Daingerfield by 4 (last week: Gunter over Daingerfield by 1)

CLASS 2A

At The Top…The top four teams in DI all impressed, but the computer liked Refugio’s win over 4A Devine more than Post’s dominant win over Tolar, which it liked more than Shiner’s physical win over 3A Hallettsville, which it liked more than Cisco’s impressive win over Clyde. Go figure. Lindsay and New Deal jump into the top 10. In Division II, Falls City made a nice leap up to No. 6, while Stratford tumbled to No. 8 after losing to Spearman. Clarendon and Wheeler debut in the top 10.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 48 Rocksprings (beat Center Point 44-3, up 33 spots from No. 81)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DI No. 96 Center Point (lost to Rocksprings 44-3, down 34 spots from No. 62)

Projected Title Games Right Now…

DIVISION I: Refugio over Post by 1 (last week: Shiner over Post by 2)

DIVISION II: Mart over Hamlin by 3 (unchanged from last week)

CLASS 1A

At The Top…Borden County’s win over Calvert was enough to leap-frog Rankin as No. 1 in the DI rankings, but Happy is the big story, jumping up to No. 8 from No. 17 with a resounding win over Groom. In DII, Motley County’s stunning loss to Westbrook reshapes things, with idle Richland Springs taking the top spot ahead of Calvert. Balmorhea moved up a spot despite its close loss to Rankin, and Klondike’s stunning mercy-rule win over McLean earned them a No. 5 ranking.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 29 Mullin (beat Olfen 64-0, up 44 spots from No. 73)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DII No. 69 Moran (lost to Benjamin 56-8, down 30 spots from No. 39)

Projected Title Games Right Now…

DIVISION I: Borden County over Jonesboro by 6 (last week: Rankin over Jonesboro by 6)

DIVISION II: Richland Springs over Balmorhea by 3 (last week: Motley County over Calvert by 1)
