Baylor football added a commitment from Iowa transfer linebacker Dillon Doyle. The redshirt sophomore must apply for a transfer waiver to play in 2020. 

“Baylor provides a SPECIAL situation to be a part of a CULTURE with world-class PEOPLE and COACHES every day, and I CAN’T WAIT to get started,” Doyle wrote in a statement on Twitter. 

Doyle saw action as a true freshman in 2018 and played on special teams and in a reserve role in 2019. He was perhaps the top contender to take over the full-time starting job at middle linebacker in 2020. 

If granted immediate eligibility, Doyle would have three years of eligibility and would immediately compete for a starting job at Baylor next to All-Texas College First Team linebacker Terrel Bernard, which would give the Bears an elite rotation. If Bernard were to leave early for the NFL Draft, he would take on a starring role starting in 2021. 

Doyle was rated a three-star prospect and the No. 762-ranked player in America in the class of 2018. The Bears also added graduate transfers DE William Bradley-King (Arkansas State) and LS Gunnar Royer (IUP) over the offseason. Doyle was also recruited by Texas and Wisconsin. 

Doyle is the son of longtime Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle. The latter parted ways with the program on Monday after multiple former Iowa players spoke out about race-based mistreatment in the program.
