Fans have long heard TCU coach Gary Patterson talk about his musical skills. On Friday night, we finally got to see it put to the test when Patterson tweeted out the music video to his debut song "Take a Step Back."

"This song was written back in April during the peak of COVID," Patterson said on Twitter. "I wanted to remind people to enjoy the time with their families, get to know their neighbors and be kind to each other through it all."

Like many graduates of Patterson's Big 12 foes, I admittedly had to log into another browser to watch the video since Coach P had me blocked – cold world. I'll admit, I was pleasantly surprised!

The song features strong vocals from the man himself along with some rhythmic guitar and lyrics that celebrate the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the moment – something that the ultra-committed Patterson certainly understands. The song is well-constructed in a tight 2:18 and has a catchy chorus that you'll hear all over Fort Worth this fall.

The music video features plenty of imagery from TCU's stadium and tailgating scene that undoubtedly will make any viewer hungry for football season. All in all, it's a strong debut for anyone, much less a future Hall of Fame football coach.

Patterson told reporters in April that he was getting some of the music that he wrote over the years recorded by an unidentified band. He noted that he had about 15 songs that he had completely written over his coaching career in Fort Worth.

"You might be really surprised when we get done with this," Patterson said. "The guy that helped [rewrite] it, he put it in the modern age. If it hits No. 1, I'm gonna make all you guys all go out to some country place, and you're all going to have to dance to it."

You win this round, coach. A few more quality tracks and maybe we can go to the Grammys next year.
