Mansfield ISD announced Monday afternoon that Greg George will take over as Mansfield’s head coach after he served as the interim head coach all of last season and the majority of 2018.
George held the role while head coach Daniel Maberry battled a rare form of lymphoma. Coach Maberry tragically passed away in early February 2020. George has been at Mansfield for 16 seasons and has held multiple roles on staff, including defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator.
Mansfield ISD athletic director Philip O’Neal in a press release stated: “In surveying parents and athletes, it was obvious they wanted to continue the culture of character development established by Coach Maberry and to enhance on-field success. We looked at each candidate through the lens of honoring the past, continuing the character-building culture established by Daniel Maberry and trying to keep the current staff intact as best possible — all while adding new staff to assist with a fresh look to move the program forward. It became apparent that Gregory George provided us the best opportunity to accomplish the vision.”
George will lead Mansfield into the 2020 season in a newly aligned District 11-6A that is considered one of the toughest in the state with Duncanville, DeSoto, Cedar Hill and Waco Midway.
The Tigers have struggled the past two seasons after a state semifinal appearance in 2015 and back to back regionals semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2017. But there is some exciting young talent in the pipeline that could put Mansfield back in playoff contention.
Prior to his time in Mansfield, George was on staff at Bovina and Wharton.
