Denton Guyer head coach John Walsh has resigned his post, sources tell Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Walsh, in a statement to the Denton Record-Chronicle, told his team he did not envision communicating this news to his team this way, "But due to COVID-19, I am not able to address you personally."

"This statement is to notify you that Denton ISD administrators and myself have agreed to move in different directions. Therefore, I have resigned my position as head football coach and campus coordinator.

"This has been an incredibly difficult time personally and for my family. Through these adverse times and changes we must be at our best. I have preached we grow more from failure than we do in prosperity, and I plan to grow during this tough time. It is my expectation for our players to be very resilient in this challenging time of change. I have all the confidence in you to respond like champions.

"I walk away respecting the game I lived for, the school I cherish, and most importantly, the young men I love.

Go Wildcats,

Coach Walsh"

Sources tell DCTF that another high-profile Dallas-Fort Worth head coach is a leading candidate for the position.

Whoever takes over at Guyer will have tremendously big shoes to fill.

Walsh, the only head coach in Guyer history, went 132-55 from 2006-19.

He was 1-19 in his first two years, before righting the ship and going to the playoffs every year since. He only had one season not above .500 (6-6 in 2016).

Walsh won state titles in 2012 and 2013, was a state finalist in 2010 and 2019, and a state semifinalist in 2008 and 2009.

He coached his son and future Oklahoma State quarterback JW Walsh, who was recently hired as a graduate assistant in Austin for the Longhorns. He also coached former Texas QB Jerrod Heard, who led Guyer to back to back state titles, and current QB Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers along with numerous other Division I players.
