TCU earns commitment from No. 1-rated dual-threat JUCO quarterback

By Joe Buvid

TCU football has added a commitment from Independence Community College quarterback Stephen Brown two days before National Signing Day.

Brown is rated the No. 91 JUCO player in the country and No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the class per the 247Sports composite. Since he redshirted his first season at “Last Chance U,” Brown should have three years of eligibility remaining.

In his first season playing at ICC, Brown completed 56.5 percent of his passes for 1,430 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions, while adding 546 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. He led the Pirates to a bounce-back 8-2 season and conference championship under new head coach Kiyoshi Harris.

The addition of Brown is in response to a difficult situation in the TCU quarterback room. The Horned Frogs lost two quarterbacks over the offseason: Michael Collins (Rice) and Justin Rogers (UNLV). That leaves projected starter Max Duggan as the only quarterback on the roster to appear in a college football game.

TCU also has former blue-chip recruit Matthew Baldwin, an Ohio State transfer, on the roster. However, Baldwin has dealt with major injuries since arriving on campus. Other than those two, the only returners are walk-ons.

Whether it’s Duggan, Brown, Baldwin or someone else, the Horned Frogs need to improve dramatically under center. TCU ranked either last or second-to-last among Big 12 teams in passing offense, completion percentage, yards per attempt and passing efficiency.

Brown becomes the second quarterback in TCU’s 2020 class, joining Sapulpa (OK) product Eli Williams. Linebacker Jamoi Hodge is also joining the Horned Frogs from Independence Community College. Brown’s addition makes TCU’s class a top 30 unit.
