UTSA football will hire longtime collegiate assistant Tyrone Nix as its newest defensive coordinator. The news was first reported by FootballScoop.

Nix has a wealth of experience as a defensive coordinator at the FBS level. The 47-year old coach got his first shot under his college coach, Jeff Bower, at Southern Miss in 2001. Two years later, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award.

He later served as defensive coordinator at South Carolina, Ole Miss and Middle Tennessee between 2005 and 2016. Nix also was a defensive analyst at Texas A&M in 2017 and safeties coach at Virginia Tech in 2018. He most recently served as linebackers coach under Matt Luke at Ole Miss in 2019, but was not retained when the staff was fired.

Nix has a track record of quick turnarounds at each of his stops. He made Southern Miss a top 15 defense, turned South Carolina into an elite pass defense and Ole Miss into a strong rush defense. Nix has historically gotten the best out of his players.

The Roadrunners ranked No. 92 nationally in total defense and No. 112 in scoring defense during a disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2019. Only UTEP ranked worse among Conference-USA teams.

Nix and new UTSA coach Jeff Traylor have never worked together and Nix has not been an on-field coach in the state of Texas. Nix is the final member of Traylor’s first coaching staff at UTSA. Many of the initial staffers on Traylor’s staff were at Arkansas with Traylor, including offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.
