Texas and Texas State have agreed to play a nonconference game during the 2026 season.

The Longhorns are also adding a 2022 matchup with ULM and 2023 game against Wyoming to the schedule. The Texas State game is the second in-state nonconference game for the Longhorns in 2026 as Texas previously announced a game against UTSA.

The Longhorns and Bobcats – separated by just 30 minutes on I-35 – have only played one time ever. Texas dominated Texas State 36-0 in the lone matchup which took place in 1930. Texas was a member of the Southwest Conference at that time, while the Bobcats were a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Obviously, much has changed since those days. The Longhorns have won four national championships since then. Southwest Texas State won a pair of Division-II championships in the 1980s under Jim Wacker.

Texas enters its fourth season under Tom Herman in 2020. The Longhorns have a 25-15 record with three straight bowl wins. Texas State is searching for its first bowl since moving up to FBS after a 3-9 start to the Jake Spavital era in 2019.
