Pearland 38, San Antonio Madison 34

It appeared San Antonio Madison was going to finally break through and play for a state championship after quarterback Cody Ennis tossed a 22-yard TD pass to wide receiver Byron Daniels to give the Mavericks a 34-31 lead over favored Pearland with under two minutes remaining in the game.

Pearland had other ideas, though, when Jacoby Lewis took the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to give the Oilers a 38-34 lead and the game-winning score to send Tony Heath’s squad to their second title game in four seasons.

Madison raced out to a 17-3 lead early on when Dominique Daniels scored on a three-yard run and Ennis hit Ja'Michael Brown on a 71-yard touchdown pass.

Trailing 24-10 at the half, Pearland’s offense got things going when Lewis and Zachary Boleger scored on short touchdown runs in the third quarter to tie the game.

After Madison reclaimed the lead on a Jacob Torres field goal at 27-24, Pearland jumped in front with 5:26 remaining as JaCobie Butler scored on a 12-yard run to put the Oilers up 31-27.

Pearland appeared to clinch the win with 3:16 remaining when defensive back Marlon Walls stopped Ennis on fourth-and-1 from the Madison' 32-yard line giving the Oilers the ball back with a chance to run the clock out.

The Mavericks defense stood tall, though, forcing a turnover on downs, and Madison took possession at its own 32 with 2:19 left in the game. Two plays later, Ennis found Devone Thomas for 46 yards to set up Lewis' heroics for the win.
