San Antonio Roosevelt 35, San Antonio Johnson 34 OT: It’s rare that North East ISD schedules a matchup like this one on a Saturday night, but two of the key contenders in the playoff race met at Heroes Stadium in a thriller that had a ton of playoff implications.

The game was a back and forth affair in which neither team led by more than a single touchdown. San Antonio Johnson was determined to slow down Roosevelt’s star RB Rashod Owens, but it opened up the passing game for QB Dewayne Coleman, who finished with 203 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Owens got things going after a slow start and finished with 168 yards rushing and a touchdown. Johnson was led by versatile Justin Rodriguez, who ran for 96 yards and a touchdown and had 41 receiving yards and a touchdown. But he left the game late in the second quarter with an injury and Johnson’s offense found the sledding much tougher in the second half.

With the game tied at 21 late in the third quarter, Johnson DB Willie Branch intercepted a Coleman pass, setting up a 10-play 99-yard drive for Johnson that saw the Jaguars go up 28-21 on Ty Reasoner’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Jaren Randle.

The Rough Riders sent the game into overtime on Robert Meadows’ 23-yard run with 3:29 left in the game.

Roosevelt opened up overtime with a touchdown as Coleman hit wide receiver Brandon Armelin for a 13-yard TD pass making it 35-28. Johnson answered on their series as Blair Blount scored on an 11-yard run to make it 35-3. Head coach Ron Rittiman elected to go for two and the win and Roosevelt’s defense came up with the big play stopping Johnson QB Reasoner short of the goal line to secure the one point win, which would wind up being key in determining the final district standings as Roosevelt ended up hosting a first round playoff game.
