Texas State will hire wide receiver coach Jacob Peeler from Ole Miss as its new offensive coordinator, according to a report from The Athletic. 

Peeler worked with Texas State coach Jake Spavital at Cal in 2016, when Spavital was offensive coordinator and Peeler was inside receivers coach. The Golden Bears’ offense finished No. 10 with 513.2 yards per game and No. 22 in scoring offense with 37.1 points per game. SMU coach Sonny Dykes was the head coach on that team. 

As receivers coach at Ole Miss, Peeler helped turn A.J. Brown, D.K. Metcalf and DaMarkus Lodge into NFL players. In a standout 2018 season, the Rebels posted a top-five passing offense in America. Peeler coached at Ole Miss under offensive coordinators Phil Longo (a former Sam Houston State assistant) and Rich Rodriguez. He was fired with the rest of the staff when Ole Miss terminated Matt Luke after the season. Peeler is considered a great recruiter.

While Peeler will serve as a fresh set of eyes for the Texas State offense, Spavital is still expected to take over play calling responsibilities following a disappointing first season in San Marcos. The Bobcats finished with a bottom 15 offense both in yardage and scoring. Peeler’s Twitter handle is “@NastyWideOuts.” Bobcats coaches hope Peeler can bring that to a unit that produced just one 400-yard receiver. 

Peeler replaces Bob Stitt, who was fired as offensive coordinator at Texas State after one year. Stitt arrived in San Marcos as one of the most respected sub-FBS offensive minds in the country. However, despite getting his hand-picked quarterback Gresch Jensen in the door, the offense struggled. Wide receivers coach Ron Antoine and tight ends coach Morris Berger were also let go. 

Before earning the inside receivers job at Cal in 2015-16, Peeler worked as a grad assistant with the program. He also has experience with his alma mater, Louisiana Tech, as a quality control coach, graduate assistant and inside receivers coach after graduating in 2007. 

The Bobcats finished 3-9 in Spavital’s first season, the program’s fifth straight season with either two or three wins.
