SMU wide receiver Reggie Roberson will forego the 2020 NFL Draft and return for his senior season on the Hilltop. Roberson announced his decision on Twitter.

Roberson ranked as easily one of the top wide receivers in college football through eight games this season. The junior from Mesquite posted 804 yards and six touchdowns before suffering a season-ending foot injury against Houston. SMU won every game Roberson played in.

Roberson enters 2020 as arguably the top returning skill player in the state, regardless of level. With his combination of production and athletic 200-pound frame, Roberson could have been a sleeper draft pick.

SMU’s trajectory changes dramatically with Roberson back in the fold. The Mustangs have to replace wide receiver James Proche and running back Xavier Jones on offense. However, Roberson and quarterback Shane Buechele should combine to form one of the best quarterback-receiver connections in Texas.

Additionally, the Mustangs will rely on offensive help from a host of young players. Rashee Rice stepped up at receiver in Roberson’s absence, posting seven catches for 122 yards against No. 24 Memphis. Running back T.J. McDaniel will play a bigger role in the offense with the Mustangs’ top two running backs gone.

SMU won 10 games for the first time since 1984 and posted a perfect home schedule for the first time since 1968. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant in college football, for his work with the group.
