UTSA football has fired head coach Frank Wilson, according to a statement from the university. WIlson posted a 19-29 record in four seasons with the program. The university will use a search firm and conduct a national coaching search to look for Wilson’s replacement.

“I want to thank Coach Wilson for his efforts on behalf of the football program and the university, and for his commitment to his student-athletes,” UTSA athletic director Dr. Lisa Campos said. “As only the second head coach in our history, Coach Wilson continue to build on the foundation of a young football program and we are grateful for his contributions to UTSA.”

Wilson was hailed as a groundbreaking hire when he joined UTSA after serving as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU for six seasons. He was hailed as one of the elite recruiters in college football, and that immediately came to fruition with an elite Conference-USA recruiting class in his first full cycle.

Wilson led the program to its first ever bowl appearance (2016 Gildan New Mexico Bowl) in his first season and to a winning record with a win over Baylor in his second. However, the Roadrunners struggled to continue the momentum after losing defensive coordinator Pete Golding to Alabama and star defensive end Marcus Davenport to the NFL.

The Roadrunners posted a 4-8 record in Wilson’s final season. However, UTSA’s four wins – Incarnate Word, Rice, Old Dominion, UTEP – had a combined zero FBS wins when they each played the Roadrunners. UTSA has not beaten a team with a winning record since a 9-7 victory over Marshall on Nov. 18, 2017.

Wilson's son, Frank Wilson IV, is a cornerback at San Antonio Brandeis with an FBS offer list. Brandeis faces off against Westlake next week.
