SMU running back Xavier Jones set the single-season program record with his 20th score of the year against Tulane on Saturday.

Jones took a handoff from Shane Buechele one-yard for a dive up the middle against Tulane to give the Mustangs a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter. His score broke Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson’s record of 19, set in 1981.

While Dickerson split carries with Craig James during the “Pony Express” days, Jones needed fewer carries (222) to reach 20 touchdowns than Dickerson did (255) to reach 19 scores.

The senior from Spring High School has put together one of the great careers in SMU history. His touchdown pushes him up to No. 3 all-time with 42 touchdowns. Dickerson leads the way with 49, tied with Zach Line. Jones also ranks No. 5 in SMU history with 3,350 career yards – and counting.

Jones posted eight carries for 66 yards and a touchdown in the first half against the Green Wave. His 1,190 yards at the half gives him the No. 10 all-time rushing season in program history with 1.5 games remaining.

The Mustangs are 30 minutes away for their first 10-win season since 1984.
