Lamar football coach Mike Schultz will not return to the program after three seasons, the university announced on Monday. The university will embark on a national coaching search.

Schultz posted a 13-22 record in three seasons as head coach. The Cardinals followed up their first FCS playoff appearance in program history with a 4-8 campaign in 2019, culminating with a five-game losing streak to close the year. A 27-3 loss to rival McNeese State in the last game of the year was the final straw.

One year earlier, Schultz led Lamar to a seven-win season, including 6-3 in Southland Conference play. The Cardinals narrowly lost to perennial FCS contender Northern Iowa by a tight 16-13 mark. However, the Cardinals struggled to replicate the production in 2019.

When starting quarterback and former Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year Jordan Hoy suffered a season-ending injury against UIW, it spelled doom for the Cardinals’ season. Lamar lost all five games from that point on. Four different quarterbacks attempted at least 15 passes, including a converted wide receiver.

Before Lamar, Schultz spent 10 years as offensive coordinator at TCU under Dennis Franchione and Gary Patterson from 1998-2008, helping to develop both Andy Dalton and LaDainian Tomlinson. He later rejoined Franchione at Texas State from 2011 to 2015 before taking the Lamar head job in 2017.

The Cardinals revived football in 2010 after a 20-year hiatus. However, Lamar has struggled to contend in the Southland Conference. Last season’s 7-5 mark was just the second winning season in the program’s second life.
