Sam Houston State Bearkats (6-4, 5-2)

Last Week: SHSU overcame a tough start to come back and earn a huge 24-10 road win over Abilene Christian last Saturday. Quarterback Eric Schmid returned from injury and completed 16-of-33 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver Ife Adeyi had an amazing game with 197 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions. Defensive back Will Lockett had a huge game with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hurry, one-half sack and a game-turning interception that ended an ACU drive deep in Kats territory. The Verdict: This was a huge win for the Kats as they are now in a four-way tie atop the Southland Conference standings after Southeastern Louisiana beat Central Arkansas last week. SHSU is in a great position to earn a playoff spot with a healthy quarterback, a great defense and two more games at home.

This Week: SHSU begins a two-game homestand when they host Northwestern State on Saturday at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Abilene Christian Wildcats (5-5, 4-4)

Last week: ACU got off to a fast start last Saturday afternoon but a critical turnover changed the game as the Wildcats lost 24-10 to Sam Houston State. Quarterback Luke Anthony completed 28-of-44 passes for 155 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Tyrese White led the rushing attack with 49 yards on five carries as the Wildcats struggled to run the ball against the Bearkats defense. Linebacker Jack Gibbens led the ACU defense with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and broke up a pass.

The Verdict: The Wildcats hopes of earning an at-large bid to the playoffs were extinguished after this loss. The potent ACU offense struggled after the first quarter to move the ball against a tough SHSU defense. The Wildcats still have a chance to affect the Southland Conference title and playoff race with a win this week.

This Week: ACU plays its final home game of the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon when they host Southeastern Louisiana. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Incarnate Word Cardinals (5-5, 4-4)

Last Week: UIW scored 21 points in the second quarter but were unable to hold onto the lead in the second half as they lost 31-24 on the road to Stephen F. Austin. Sophomore quarterback Jon Copeland completed 35-of-62 passes for 349 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Kamden Perry led the receivers with 105 yards on 11 catches. Linebacker Jerick Pitre had eight tackles with one tackle for loss and an interception while defensive end Chance Main had an outstanding game with eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

The Verdict: The Cardinals season has taken a tough turn with a three-game losing streak. It is important to note that UIW has a very young football team as head coach Eric Morris is building with youth. With the amount of good young talent, this team could make a deep playoff run in a couple of years.

This Week: UIW finishes a two-game road trip at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon against New Mexico State. The game will be broadcast on Flo Sports.

Prairie View A&M Panthers (4-5, 3-3)

Last Week: PVAMU scored the first 23 points in the game as they rolled to a 37-20 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff last Saturday. Quarterback Trazon Connley completed 12-of-17 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown while adding 87 yards rushing on 11 carries. Dawonya Tucker added 91 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Wide receiver Jordan Jones caught six passes for 119 yards and a touchdown while senior defensive back Reggie Stubblefield led the defense with nine tackles, one tackle for loss and forced a fumble.

The Verdict: The Panthers rebounded from a tough loss to earn a big conference win. PVAMU earned this win behind redshirt freshman Trazon Connley at quarterback with senior Jalen Morton injured. The Panthers should roll this week in their final regular-season home game and could end the season on a three-game winning streak.

This Week: PVAMU concludes a two-game homestand against Edward Waters (Fla.) at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Lamar Cardinals (4-6, 2-5)

Last Week: Twenty unanswered points were too much for Lamar to overcome last Saturday as they lost 34-13 on the road to Northwestern State. Quarterback Marcel Johnson completed 5-of-20 passes for 107 yards and an interception while adding 57 yards rushing on 15 carries. Defensive back Michael Lawson had another incredible performance with 15 tackles, seven solo, one tackle for loss, forced a fumble and returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown while defensive end Daniel Crosley added 11 tackles, six solo, two tackles for loss, one sack, one quarterback hurry and forced a fumble.

The Verdict: The Cardinals offense has struggled mightily since senior quarterback Jordan Hoy broke his collarbone which ended his season. Lamar has lost three straight games and will need to find some consistency on offense to have an opportunity to win over its final two games.

This Week: Lamar concludes a two-game road trip when they play Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-8, 2-5)

Last Week: SFA overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to earn a huge 34-24 win over Incarnate Word at home last Saturday. Cam Arnold got the start at quarterback and completed 15-of-22 passes for 201 yards with a touchdown and an interception while adding 17 yards rushing a touchdown on six carries. Xavier Gipson had a great game with 132 yards and a touchdown on four catches while Thomas Hutchings added two rushing touchdowns for the ‘Jacks. Freshman linebacker Brevin Randle led the defense with 12 tackles, seven solo.

The Verdict: The improvement of this ‘Jacks team from the beginning of the season is remarkable. Head coach Colby Carthel always knows how to get the best out of his teams, and he has done an outstanding job with a young team and adversity this season. The future remains bright for SFA.

This Week: SFA begins a two-game road trip as they play No. 13 Central Arkansas at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Houston Baptist Huskies (4-6, 1-5)

Last Week: HBU held tough against Nicholls on the road last Saturday but the Colonels reeled off 21 unanswered points to earn a 48-27 win over the Huskies. Quarterback Bailey Zappe completed 26-of-41 passes for 246 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Running back Dreshawn Minnieweather had a tremendous game with 145 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries. Linebacker Brennan Young had 11 tackles, nine solo, and broke up a pass while defensive back Alfred King recorded 10 tackles, all solo, and forced a fumble.

The Verdict: This was another tough loss for a Huskies team. It is important to remember that this HBU team is still young and will be a threat again next season. The Huskies need only one win to set a school record for most wins in a season and could earn that win at home this week.

This Week: HBU plays its final home game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host Lamar. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Texas Southern Tigers (0-10, 0-6)

Last Week: TSU made a valiant rally but fell short with a 27-21 loss at home to Alabama State. Quarterback DeAndre Johnson led the offense as he completed 16-of-26 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing touchdown for the Tigers. Dallas Blacklock Jr, Jadrian McGraw and Jarryl Taylor each recorded nine tackles while Taylor added 1.5 sacks and forced a fumble for the TSU defense.

The Verdict: The Tigers have been close to earning their first win of the season on multiple occasions this season but have been unable to get over the hump. TSU will have one more chance to earn a win this season when they travel to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff following a bye week.

This Week: TSU has a bye this week.
