Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman intends to redshirt the 2019 season after missing six games with an injury.

Bowman suffered an upper-body injury during a 28-14 loss to Arizona in the third game of the season. He was originally ruled out for "several" weeks. He will come back as a redshirt sophomore in 2020.

"We talked to Alan last night, talked to his parents," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said. "It's Alan's decision. 100 percent respect it. It's the smart thing to do, and it's part of the new rules that I think is a good consequence."

The sophomore from Grapevine was projected as one of the top quarterbacks in the state after throwing for 2,638 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions across eight games in a standout freshman campaign. Bowman completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,020 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions before suffering the injury.

In his place, former Mr. Texas Football Jett Duffey has excelled. In six starts, the junior completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 1,774 yards, 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Duffey also ran for 127 yards and a touchdown. The Red Raiders are 2-4 in his starts.

Bowman missed multiple games as a true freshman after sustaining a collapsed lung in two separate games. His 2019 injury is unrelated to the previous issues.

Since Bowman appeared in three games before getting hurt, he would be eligible to appear in one more game this season and still be eligible to redshirt. The Red Raiders have matchups remaining against TCU, Kansas State and Texas. Tech needs to win two of the final three matchups to make a bowl game.

Freshman quarterback Maverick McIvor has also been cleared to play following a lower-body injury suffered over the offseason. Both Bowman and McIvor suited up and warmed up last week before the game against West Virginia. Wells expressed desire to try and get McIvor into a game at some point if the opportunity presents itself.
