Statement wins across Texas
Arguably the most eye-popping result from Friday night was No. 9 Post’s 53-0 dismantling of previously unbeaten No. 6 New Deal (8-1, 3-1). The Antelopes (9-0, 4-0) jumped out to a 25-0 first-quarter lead and just sat on the game from there, completely shutting out the Lions’ high-powered offense for the first time since 2012 and holding them to just 88 yards of total offense.

Brenham (7-2, 5-1) made District 13-5A come down to a two-team race with a convincing 48-7 win over Leander Glenn (5-4, 4-2) who was previously tied for second with the Cubs. The result sets up a chance for Brenham to win a share of the district title next week versus turnaround darling and first-place Pflugerville Weiss (8-1, 6-0).

No. 5 Diboll (9-0, 5-0) kept its defense in high gear against No. 10 Franklin (6-2, 4-1) with a 34-7 win that clinched a share of the District 11-3A title for the Lumberjacks carried by Daris McMillan’s 168 yards on the ground.

Lastly, No. 3 San Saba seemed to get its first test of the season against Crawford with the score tied at 14 all at halftime, more points than the Dillos had surrendered all season. But Armadillos star quarterback Sean O’Keefe and his 369 yards on the ground, buoyed by multiple long runs, eventually pushed San Saba to a 48-28 win.

No. 3 Highland Park gets Randy Allen 400th win, but No. 7 Lancaster shows state title fight
No. 7 Lancaster was determined to not let last season’s rout to No. 3 Highland Park play out again and the Tigers nearly pulled off a monster win, but the Scots’ vaunted offense eventually outgunned Lancaster in overtime, 42-35. Highland Park quarterback Chandler Morris shook off two interceptions and rushed for 103 yards and two scores in addition to his two passing touchdowns. The Scots’ defense came up with the clutch stop in overtime on fourth down to seal the win.

The win marked Randy Allen’s 400th as head coach putting him in elite company with Corpus Christi Calallen’s Phil Danaher and Celina’s G.A. Moore Jr.

For Lancaster, the game was a proving ground for the Tigers to show that they’re a real threat in the 5A DI title race. With second place in District 6-5A all but locked up, if things go according to planned, Lancaster likely has a tough third round matchup with No. 5 Lufkin on the docket before potentially seeing Highland Park again in a Region II final.

No. 2 Wall will be sending Whitney a Thank You letter
It looks like No. 2 Wall will be making a move to the top spot in 3A Division I after Whitney’s gigantic 26-21 upset win over No. 1 Grandview to clinch the District 9-3A title.

Grandview hadn’t previously lost since September 27 of last season to West, 42-41. The loss puts the Zebras’ return to AT&T on a tougher path. With a second-place finish, Grandview could now see Rockdale in bi-district, No. 8 Cameron Yoe in round three and No. 5 Diboll in a regional semifinal…eesh.
