Big third quarter lifts Lancaster, sets up showdown with Highland Park
Before No. 7 Lancaster (7-1, 5-0) could turn its sights toward No. 4 and defending state champion Highland Park (7-1, 5-0), it had to get through a Mansfield Timberview (5-3, 4-1) team that was coming off back-to-back shutout performances in the midst of a five-game winning streak.

After heading into the locker room with a 14-7 edge, the Tigers opened up the second half with a 13-point third quarter thanks to a pair of big plays, one on a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Glenn Rice Jr. to Tre Bradford and the other, a 41-yard touchdown run from Karon Neblett. Lancaster’s defense also held Timberview quarterback Jaden Hullaby to just 14 yards rushing during the period. The Timberwolves were held to just 2.8 yards per carry while Lancaster averaged nearly eight.

With the win, next week’s Highland Park at Lancaster game will be the de facto District 6-5A Championship. Last year, the Scots won at Highlander Stadium, 39-14. But unlike 2018, both teams enter 7-1 and in the DCTF Top 10 setting up what should be a marquee matchup in the state next week.

…And just like that, Pflugerville Weiss controls District 13-5A
Before the season started, newcomer Leander Glenn (5-3, 4-1) and Brenham (6-2, 4-1) looked to be the early favorites for the District 13-5A crown. After all, the Grizzlies had won the CenTex district during their first varsity season in 2018, so it was easy to expect them to improve in 2019 and remain in the mix.

But in one of the biggest surprises of the year, it’s the other new school in the district, Pflugerville Weiss (7-1, 5-0) who are the frontrunners with wins over Glenn (42-0) and, most recently, Georgetown East View (14-7) in a rescheduled game that was finished earlier Friday afternoon. Keep in mind, Weiss went 0-10 during its first season in 2018 and only scored in the double-digits once, consider that turnaround.

And now, the Wolves are in the driver's seat for district title after Brenham dropped a shocker to Bastrop Friday night, 30-25. The Cubs still have to play Glenn while Weiss will likely be heavy favorites against Marble Falls next week before hosting Brenham in the regular season finale for what could wrap up the school’s first-ever district crown.

…Weiss went winless in 2018, that probably should be mentioned again.

Corpus Christi Miller and No. 2 Wall stay unbeaten
Big tests were on the docket for two of the state’s remaining unbeaten teams in 5A-DI and 3A-DI respectively. Corpus Christi Miller came off a narrow 34-28 win over Flour Bluff last week and traveled to face the defending District 15-5A champion, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. Miller trailed by as many as 23 in the opening quarter before storming back to force the game into double overtime where a fourth down stop by the Buccaneer defense propelled Miller to a 50-43 win over Veterans Memorial.

No. 2 Wall on the other hand, hosted a fellow unbeaten in No. 7 Eastland. The Mavericks hoped to spoil the Hawks’ district title hopes and also keep their own unbeaten run alive, but it was a Wall team that still hasn’t allowed over 14 points all year that held firm in the 28-14 victory. Eastland’s offense had put up totals of 57, 60, 59 and 76 points this season before running into one of the state’s best defenses.

Is Wall’s impressive win enough to push them above Grandview for the top spot in 3A-DI? We’ll have to wait and see.

Social Media Highlights:

We cheated last week and used a Thursday highlight for the Friday Night column, but guess what? We're doing it again because North Shore's Charles King's one-handed snag was that impressive against No. 8 Beaumont West Brook.

Let's get in on the premier six-man game of the week and check out the wintry conditions No. 3 McLean and No. 4 White Deer were playing in.

The annual Battle of the Mound came down to the final drive in which Marcus sacked Flower Mound QB Blake Short and the Jaguars couldn't get the field goal unit lined up in time as time expired.

And we'll leave with this one from Wichita Falls Rider and Plainview. The caption says it all.
