Team of the Week:

Lamar Cardinals (4-3, 2-2)

Last Week: In a game that was a defensive battle throughout regulation, Michael Lawson intercepted a pass for Lamar to seal an incredible 20-17 triple-overtime win over No. 24 Sam Houston State.

Quarterback Jordan Hoy completed 24-of-36 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown while leading the Cardinals rushing attack with 13 yards on 25 carries. Myles Wanza led the receivers with 67 yards on nine receptions and added eight yards rushing on 19 carries.

Lawson led the Cardinals defense with 10 tackles, five solo, broke up a pass and intercepted two passes in the game. Camero Houston added seven tackles, six solo, two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble in the end zone for the only Lamar score in regulation. The Cardinals defense held the Kats offense to only 107 total passing yards and 257 total yards in the game.

The Verdict: This was the second straight big win for the Cardinals who are beginning to find the same rhythm they had last year when they made a run to the FCS playoffs. It is not every day that a team can win a game on the road against a top 25 opponent with only 34 total yards rushing but the Cardinals always find a way. Lamar will need another big road win this week to continue their current streak.

This Week: Lamar concludes a two-game road trip with a visit to No. 25 Incarnate Word at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
