Week 7 is in the books and playoff races are heating up.

Here’s a sampling of the games we picked and what actually happened. We could focus on where we got it right, but it’s more fun to look at games that made us look, well, human.

What happened: 6A No. 15 Lake Travis 26, 6A No. 6 Westlake 25

Our experts went 0-3 on this one. I was even part of a 4-person panel in the Austin American-Statesman that got this wrong. Rivalry games produce magical moments, and the 15th meeting between Lake Travis and Westlake went to the wire. Cavalier quarterback Hudson Card tossed a trio of touchdown passes, including the winner to Grayson Sandlin with 4:10 left, but his reception off of tight end Isaac Norris’ pass proved a key conversion to set up the winning score.

A&M Posts Convincing Win in Matchup of Top 10 Consolidated Programs

What our computer thought: A&M Consolidated was a 9-point favorite

What happened: 5A-2 No. 4 A&M Consolidated 41, 5A-2 No. 8 Lamar Consolidated 7

If our experts missed on one top-15 matchup, they made up for it with this 5A, D2 top 10 tilt. A&M Consolidated went on the road and throttled a Mustangs team that had beaten all of its previous opponents by at least 23 points. Vince Sheffield led a dominant defensive effort for the Tigers with two sacks while forcing a fumble and knocking down a pass. Kerry Brooks sparked the offense with 196 yards on just 13 carries.

Celina Wins 4th Straight with 34-0 Win Over Favored Paris

What happened: Celina 34, Paris 0

Celina kept it simple. Paris couldn’t stop the run, so the Bobcats didn’t attempt a pass. Logan Point and Hunter Watson combined for 287 yards and five touchdowns, and the Bobcats’ defense held Paris to just 107 yards of offense. After a 2-3 start, Celina has found its stride, winning four in a row by an average of 46. Next up, a District 7-4A-1 showdown with Melissa.

Paul Pewitt Sprints to Big Win Over New Diana

What happened: Paul Pewitt 47, New Diana 21

Pewitt used an offensive explosion to stay perfect on the season. LaJathan Allen and Kientary Hawkins led a punishing rushing attack that led to 535 yards of total offense in a game that should have been closer. 

Top Ranked Lone Star Continues its Domination of 5A-1

What happened: 5A-1 No. 1 Lone Star 63, Independence 14

The Rangers win at Highland Park was impressive. More impressive might be the fact that Lone Star hasn’t slowed down following that signature performance, including a 63-14 destruction of then-unbeaten Independence, which learned after the game that it would forfeit an earlier win over Frisco Heritage. Led by Garrett Rangel, Marvin Mims, Jake Bogdon and Jaden Nixon, the Rangers scored touchdowns on their first five drives and never looked back.

San Antonio Brandeis Continues Unbeaten Run

What happened: 6A No. 23 Brandeis 37, O’Connor 15

The final score may not be indicative of how close the game was. O’Connor, in the midst of a 23-game district winning streak, trailed just 23-15 with 3:36 left in the game before Jordan Battles and the Broncos pulled away. After his team recovered the onside kick, Battles went 45 yards for a score, then added a 52-yard score with a minute left. He finished with 151 yards on 15 carries. Brandeis managed just 31 yards rushing on the night.

Needville Justifies Top 10 Ranking by Doubling Up West Columbia

What happened: 4A-1 No. 10 Needville 34, West Columbia 17

Needville knocked West Columbia from the unbeaten ranks by punishing mistakes with a heavy dose of running back Ashton Stredick. Stredick rushed for 307 yards and four touchdowns, including a 99-yarder.

Clyde Can’t Find Way Over, Around or Through Wall’s Defense

What our computer thought: Wall was a 24-point favorite

What happened: 3A-2 No. 3 Wall 35, Clyde 7

The computer hit this one almost on the number as No.3 Wall showed off its defensive prowess in a suffocating win over Clyde. The Hawks held the Bulldogs to 47 yards of offense. Wall forced five turnovers and also benefited when Clyde couldn’t get off a punt after an errant snap.

Second-Half Surge Sends Jourdanton Past Marion

What happened: Jourdanton 35, Marion 14

Unbeaten Jourdanton put a big dent in Marion’s hopes of a third-straight District 15-3A-1 title. The Indians scored the game’s first 35 points, including 28 third and fourth-quarter points to break open a close game. Aidan Barth and Cole Andrus led a patient, balanced offense that got going after the halftime break.

Leach’s Passing Helps Andrews Soar Past Unbeaten Canyon

What our computer thought: Canyon was a 1-point favorite

What happened: Andrews 41, Canyon 22

Our experts had this one picked correctly, at least midway through the second quarter. Trailing 16-6, Andrews reeled off four straight touchdowns and cruised home with a 41-22 win. Brett Leach ran for a score and then through three of his five touchdown passes to push the Mustangs past the Eagles. He completed 17 of his 30 pass attempts for 318 yards.
