From chaos in Class 2A Division II — where eight of the top 10 teams lost last week — to the headline-grabbing upset of Highland Park by Frisco Lone Star, here are the most interesting results from Week 3.

Misery on Mockingbird Lane as Scots’ streak comes to an end

What our computer thought: Highland Park was a 6-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Highland Park would win

What Matt Stepp thought: Highland Park would win by 3 points

What happened: No. 3 Frisco Lone Star 30, No. 1 Highland Park 19

In a top-three battle, any result shouldn’t surprise, but given the Scots’ recent dominance – three consecutive state titles, 33 straight wins – and the home field advantage, we went with the home team in a tight one. Lone Star intercepted Chandler Morris four times and standout receiver Marvin Mims hauled in 11 catches for 231 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yarder on the first play of the game. Unlikely Trojans fire first salvo in District 25-6A playoff race

What our computer thought: Austin Del Valle was a 9-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: NA

What Matt Stepp thought: NA

What happened: Austin Anderson 20, Austin Del Valle 17

Outside of those who watch District 25-6A closely, few eyes were focused on this game, but with Westlake and Lake Travis all but locked into the top two playoff spots, a five-team race is in store for the other two spots, with Anderson and Del Valle being prime competitors. Blaise Darbyshire had just enough on a 42-yard field goal to give Anderson the lead with 30 seconds left, and the defense knocked down Del Valle’s last gasp pass. Anderson — which started 1-4 last year and finished 5-5 — remained unbeaten at 3-0 and has an early leg up on the race for a playoff spot with a game against another contender, Hays Consolidated, this week.

Another dominating effort leads Beaumont United past Port Arthur Memorial

What our computer thought: Beaumont United was a 1-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Port Arthur Memorial would win

What Matt Stepp thought: Beaumont United would win by 6

What happened: Beaumont United 35, Port Arthur Memorial 6

In a regional rivalry between 6A Beaumont United and 5A Division I Port Arthur Memorial, our experts thought we’d see a close game. Thanks to Beaumont United’s defense, we didn’t. In their second year following consolidation, the Timberwolves are rolling early. James Wilson rushed for 110 yards and scored twice, and Chandler Rivers returned a punt for a touchdown after muffing a punt earlier in the game. In a district with both of the defending 6A champions, Beaumont United could make things interesting.

Last second field goal lifts rescues Mustangs

What our computer thought: Galena Park North Shore was an 18-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: North Shore would win

What Matt Stepp thought: North Shore would win by 9

What happened: No. 5 North Shore 24, Spring Westfield 21

Thanks to an 11-point rally in the final 2:55, our experts got it right, and by "got it right", we mean picked the winner. North Shore’s early season struggles continue — in part due to Zach Evans being held out of the last two games — but John Villalobos’ 33-yarder kept the Mustangs from falling below the .500 mark heading into district play. If Evans and injured receiver Shadrach Banks make their way back into the line-up, expect the Mustangs to work their way back into championship contention.

Timberwolves work overtime after driving from Austin to San Angelo

What our computer thought: Cedar Park was a 19-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Cedar Park would win

What Matt Stepp thought: Cedar Park would win by 11

What happened: Cedar Park 41, San Angelo Central 35 (OT)

If it weren’t for a frantic fourth-quarter comeback, our experts would have missed on this one. The Timberwolves, known for their defense, scored 14 points in the final 58 seconds to rally from a 35-21 deficit. After Ryder Hernandez scored, the Timberwolves recovered the onside kick. Hernandez then hit Josh Cameron to tie the game with 14 seconds left, and after the Bobcats failed to score on their overtime possession, Cedar Park won it on Brock Johnson’s 9-yard run.

Lions continue early-season roll with upset of ranked Graham

What our computer thought: Graham was a 7-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Brownwood would win

What Matt Stepp thought: Graham would win by 4

What happened: Brownwood 28, No. 7 Graham 14

Score one for the editor. Brownwood found itself trailing in a game for the first time this season and decided it didn’t like that look. The Lions tightened up their defense and unleashed Isyah Campos. The receiver hauled in a 77-yard touchdown pass from Drew Huff to spark the 28-14 win. Brownwood is 3-0 for the first time since 2015 and knocking on the door of the rankings.

Battle of 2A titans sees Hawley knock off Hamlin

What our computer thought: Hamlin was a 6-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Hamlin would win

What Matt Stepp thought: NA

What happened: No. 10 Hawley 46, No. 1 Hamlin 44

It’s always note-worthy when a top-ranked team stumbles, but it’s hardly a devastating loss for Hamlin. Colton Marshall rushed for 224 yards to lead Hawley, and his third touchdown gave the Bearcats a 46-37 lead, but the Pied Pipers closed the gap quickly on a 62-yard pass from Braydin Warner to Austin Brown, setting up a frantic final four minutes after the onside kick failed. Hamlin was one of eigh teams ranked in the 2A Division II rankings lose in Week 3.

Duncanville defends home turf, state pride with win over Washington, DC power St. John’s

What our computer thought: Does not pick games with out-of-state opponents

What Greg Tepper thought: NA

What Matt Stepp thought: NA

What happened: No. 2 Duncanville 35, St. Johns (DC) 14

In a battle of nationally-ranked teams – MaxPreps ranks Duncanville 5th and St. John’s 16th – the Panthers put their Texas pride on full display. The Panthers scored the game’s final 21 points and Roderick Daniels, who scored two touchdowns, couldn’t surpress his Texas pride. “We just sent a statement to everybody in the state and everybody in the nation," he told The Dallas Morning News. But the Panthers bring their focus back to playing in-state opponents, district opponents who mark the start of what Reginald Samples hopes is a run back to the state championship game.

Taft scores last-minute touchdown to nab first win against Bishop

What our computer thought: Taft was a 5-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: NA

What Matt Stepp thought: NA

What happened: Taft 41, Bishop 40

What’s the only thing better than getting that first win of the season? Getting it in come-from-behind fashion, on the road, by scoring a touchdown in the final minute. Oscar Ozuna’s 39-yard run with 14 seconds left capped a back-and-forth game.

Franklin holds off Mart in battle of 3A, 2A teams

What our computer thought: Franklin was a 7-point favorite

What Greg Tepper thought: Franklin would win

What Matt Stepp thought: NA

What happened: Franklin 20, No. 5 Mart 16

An uncharacteristic quick strike helped Franklin – known for its methodical Slot-T rushing attack — hold off Mart 20-16. After getting the ball back with 35 seconds left in the second quarter, the Lions drove 71 yards in four quick plays to take a 20-14 lead on Datron Dixon’s touchdown catch. Mart blocked the extra point and returned it for a two-point safety, and neither team scored in the second half.
