Welcome to Inside the Numbers, a weekly look at Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s comprehensive computer rankings. Each week, we take a deep dive into that week’s Texas high school football computer rankings to sort out the signal from the noise.

CLASS 6A

At The Top…For the second week in a row, Katy beat the No. 1 team in the 6A computer rankings — first Galena Park North Shore, now Humble Atascocita. It’ll be hard for them to do it a third time, considering they’re the new top of the table. Longview is up to No. 4 after drubbing rival Marshall, and Southlake Carroll and Beaumont West Brook enter the top 10 after moving to 2-0.

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: Laredo Nixon. The computer is not impressed by wins over Laredo Martin and Laredo Cigarroa by a combined ten points, apparently.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: Cedar Hill. The Longhorns have a respectable loss at Allen and a very narrow loss to Denton Guyer, both of whom are in the top 7 of Class 6A.

Fastest Riser: Fort Bend Bush. The Broncos are 2-0, but more importantly, they just beat Langham Creek, against whom they were 13-point underdogs. The defense was terrific in a 19-2 victory, and it’s got coach Allen Aldridge’s bunch up 49 spots from No. 149 to No. 99.

Other risers: Conroe (up 44 spots to No. 167), Richardson Pearce (up 40 spots to No. 148), Fort Bend Travis (up 39 spots to No. 41).

Biggest Faller: Lakeview Centennial. The Patriots were 19-poitn favorites over a struggling North Mesquite squad, but ended up suffering a 33-14 loss. That cost them a whopping 65 spots in the rankings, down to No. 186 from No. 121.

Other fallers: Aldine Davis (down 63 spots to No. 195); Killeen (down 54 spots to No. 196); Alief Hastings (down 49 spots to No. 108).

CLASS 5A

At The Top…Highland Park returns to the top of Division I, swapping spots with Alvin Shadow Creek; their big test with new No. 3 Frisco Lone Starlooms. Hutto makes a big jump into the top 10, from No. 13 to No. 6, after drilling Liberty Hill. A&M Consolidated’s big rivalry win over Bryan earned them a bump to No. 3 in Division II, while Burleson Centennial is the newest member of the Top 10 (up to No. 9 from No. 13), setting up a Top 10 matchup with Aledo.

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: San Antonio Burbank. The Bulldogs got an overtime win over 4A Pearsall in the opener, and a 5-point win over woeful San Antonio Memorial.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: College Station. The Cougars are a mere 0-1 after taking a Week 2 bye, though their loss to Richmond Foster isn’t exactly aging well, and they draw a dangerous Huntsville squad this week.

Fastest Riser: Granbury. What a bizarre season for the Pirates, who go from a 41-point loss to Weatherford to a 38-point win over Seagoville (as 20-point underdogs!). The computer can’t figure them out, but the purple and gold are up 44 spots from No. 99 to No. 55 in Division I.

Other risers: Dayton (up 40 spots to No. 58 in DII), Crowley (up 25 spots to No. 14 in DI), Frisco Heritage (up 22 spots to No. 78 in DI).

Biggest Faller: Kaufman. The Lions were 18-point favorites over 4A Crandall, which makes their 48-0 loss all the more painful. They’re down 37 spots to No. 119 in Division II.

Other fallers: Seagoville (down 37 spots to No. 95 in DII), Galena Park (down 28 spots to No. 109 in DI), Fort Worth Eastern Hills (down 24 spots to No. 108 in 5A DII)

CLASS 4A

At The Top…There’s a new squad atop Division I in the form of the Argyle Eagles, who earned 4A’s most impressive victory with a road win over Waco La Vega. That was enough to propel them over now-No. 2 Carthage. Lampasas is up to No. 6 from No. 10, and the DI Top 10 newcomer is La Feria, up to No. 7 from No. 12. Division II has small movement — Gilmer up to No. 4 from No. 7, for example — and three new members of the Top 10 in No. 7 Midland Greenwood, No. 9 Lorena and No. 10 Sunnyvale.

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis. A year after snapping the state’s longest losing streak, the Eagles are 2-0…though with wins over Dallas Conrad and North Dallas, the computer isn’t buying them.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: Silsbee. The computer can’t quit the Tigers, who have losses to 5A Port Neches-Groves and 3A DII No. 1 Newton.

Fastest Riser: Crandall. Heck, who knows? A week after tumbling in the rankings because of a blowout loss to Tyler Chapel Hill, the Pirates bounced right back with a blowout win over 5A Kaufman. Shrug. They’re up 30 spots from No. 77 to No. 47 in 4A DI.

Other risers: Quinlan Ford (up 30 spots to No. 57 in DI), Ferris (up 27 spots to No. 34 in DII), El Campo (up 23 spots to No. 35 in DI).

Biggest Faller: Fort Worth Dunbar. Losing to 3A Dallas Madison isn’t bad (the Trojans are No. 13 in the computer rankings in 3A DI). Losing 42-0, though? Yikes. The Wildcats are down 28 spots from No. 46 to No. 74 in DI.

Other fallers: Fort Worth Benbrook (down 23 spots to No. 78 in DI), Rockport-Fulton (down 20 spots to No. 42 in DII), Houston North Forest (down 18 spots to No..63 in DI)

CLASS 3A

At The Top…The biggest change in Division I is the big leap for Yoakum, from No. 15 all the way to No. 5. That’s what beating a 4A state champion in Cuero will do. Troy jumps into the top 10 as well, up to No. 8, and Brock is knocking on the door again, up to No. 10 from No. 20. In Division II, how about Poth? The Pirates use a win over rival Falls City to vault from No. 25 all the way to No. 8. Other newcomers to the top 10 include Tidehaven (up to No. 9) and Van Vleck (No. 10).

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: Dallas Life Oak Cliff. Narrow wins over winless teams like Callisburg and Dallas Pinkston ain’t gonna cut it for the Lions, and a game with Dallas Gateway Charter (No. 97 in 3A DI) won’t help much, either.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: Childress. It’s been a rough start for the Bobcats, but the computer still believes in them, even with losses to Bushland and Perryton.

Fastest Riser: Comfort. The Bobcats are cruising right now at 2-0 after a 61-point thrashing of a decent Austin Hyde Park Baptist squad. They’re up 38 spots from No. 58 to No. 15 in 3A DII.

Other risers: McGregor (up 37 spots to No. 42 in DI), Karnes City (up 24 spots to No. 71 in DI), Dallas Madison (up 23 spots to No. 13 in DI).

Biggest Faller: Kemp. The Yellowjackets are now 0-2 and have been outscored 98-0. Oof. Their loss to Mabank dropped them 30 spots from No. 52 to No. 82 in Division I.

Other fallers: Jacksboro (down 23 spots to No. 42 in DII), Stockdale (down 22 spots to No. 80 in DII), Teague (down 17 spots to No. 54 in DI).

CLASS 2A

At The Top…In Division I? Pretty chalky. Holland made a big leap from No. 13 to No. 6, and San Saba creeped up to No. 3, but that’s about it as far as news. But in Division II? CHAOS. A new No. 1 in Hamlin; Wellington up four spots, Gruver up six spots, Grapeland up four spots, Mart down to No. 6, and Windthorst cracking the top 10 from No. 17. Falls City got clobbered, dropping from No. 4 to No. 12.

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: Amarillo Highland Park. Honestly, this feels like the computer taking its time…they upset Clarendon last week, and they’ll be big underdogs against Vega, but if they win that? They won’t be ranked 66th for long.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: Price Carlisle. All the way down at No. 27. Not a ton of winless teams getting love at the 2A level.

Fastest Riser: Ozona. The Lions made a huge statement with a 65-0 win over Iraan, and that’ll get the computer’s attention. Ozona is up 26 spots from No. 48 to No. 22 in Division I.

Other risers: Electra (up 25 spots to No. 39 in DII), Kenedy (up 22 spots to No. 63 in DI), Harleton (up 19 spots to No. 58 in DI).

Biggest Faller: Chico. The Dragons followed a robust win over Petrolia in the opener…with a 38-point loss to Electra, at home. That’s tough. They’re down 31 spots from No. 59 to No. 90 in DI.

Other fallers: Iraan (down 30 spots to No. 65 in DII), Bosqueville (down 25 spots to No. 50 in DI), Junction (down 19 spots to No. 69 in DI).

CLASS 1A

At The Top…Sterling City makes a big leap in DI, from No. 6 to No. 2, after a big shutout win over Buena Vista, while the rest of the Top 10 remains pretty static overall. Same goes with Division II, where there was some slight movement (like Strawn moving up a spot, and Grandfalls-Royalty dipping a couple spots), but it was overall a pretty chalky week in six-man.

Lowest-Ranked Undefeated Team: Chillicothe. Beating Higgins and Benjamin by the 45-point mercy rule is one thing. Going on the road to No. 1 Jayton, as the Eagles will do this week, is a different matter altogether.

Highest-Ranked Winless Team: Blum. It’s easy to see why this is for the Bobcats, who have a respectable loss to defending champion McLean and a very narrow loss on the road to perennial contender Jonesboro.

Fastest Riser: Bynum. Hey, how about that? A 45-point mercy rule win over Walnut Springs — on the road, no less — will certainly move the needle. The Bulldogs are up 22 spots from No. 38 to No. 16 in 1A DII.

Other risers: Avalon (up 19 spots to No. 17 in DI), Fannindel (up 17 spots to No. 19 in DII), Three Way (up 16 spots to No. 47 in DII).

Biggest Faller: Walnut Springs. Remember what we said about Bynum? Here’s the other end of that. WS is down 22 spots from No. 21 to No. 43 in DII.

Other fallers: Petersburg (down 16 spots to No. 36 in DI), Vernon Northside (down 12 spots to No. 62 in DI), Guthrie (down 11 spots to No. 58 in DII).
