We picked a team of standouts from the second week of college football in the state of Texas, but a theme may start to emerge. 

QB: Shane Buechele, SMU

The difference for SMU with a confident Shane Buechele is incalculable. Everyone reading this outlet knows how much we love Mason Fine, but Buechele was easily the best quarterback on the field in a dominant 49-27 win over the Mean Green. If Buechele keeps playing at this level, SMU could quietly become a division title contender. 

RB: Xavier Jones, SMU

Buechele was huge, but a healthy Xavier Jones is a huge deal for this SMU offense. He rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries for the Mustangs on Saturday. If he’s back to his 2017 form, the SMU offense has tremendous upside.  

WR: Denzel Mims, Baylor

Mims struggled to find his place in the Baylor offense a year ago after a standout 2017 season, but he flashed everything about what makes him a legit NFL prospect. The senior caught three touchdown passes and posted his first 100-yard game of the season in an easy win over a solid defensive UTSA squad. 

OL: Texas

The numbers were admittedly not great for this Texas offensive line, but that’s going to happen while playing LSU. More importantly, the line helped keep LSU’s elite front seven under control, especially after halftime. The unit stood tall, especially in pass defense, and made big plays at big times to get the Texas offense going. 

UTL: Devin Duvernay, Texas

With Collin Johnson struggling, Duvernay emerged for the second week in a row as an electric possession receiver. He caught 12 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and was really the primary catalyst in keeping Texas in the ballgame against a powerful LSU squad. 

DL: LaDarius Hamilton, North Texas

Even on an off day for the defense, Hamilton proved why he’s an all-conference defensive lineman. Hamilton broke free for six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries and a sack against an SMU squad firing on all cylinders. 

LB: Bryan London II, Texas State

There wasn’t anything especially special in the box score for Bryan London, but he helped spearhead a dominant defensive effort against Wyoming. The Cowboys mustered just 293 total yards of offense and 4.4 yards per play. 

DB: B.J. Foster, Texas

Foster played a variety of different roles on the Texas defense, and excelled. He led the way with nine tackles, and also got in the backfield for a pair of sacks. He could be out for some time, but Texas still proved they have a major, versatile weapon when Foster is healthy.

ST: Grayland Arnold, Baylor

Arnold returned three punts for 83 yards against UTSA, including a breakaway 73-yard punt return for a touchdown to give the Bears a commanding 28-0 lead early in the second quarter.
