Rice quarterback Wiley Green was carted off the field against Wake Forest after sustaining an apparent head injury in the first quarter of the Owls' 41-21 loss to Wake Forest. 

Green was diving for the goal line when Wake Forest linebacker Justin Strnad hit him right in the crown of the helmet. The redshirt freshman was immobilized and had his facemask removed on a stretcher. Green did not immediately appear to be moving, though he gave the crowd a thumbs up on the way out. 

The program says that early returns of his injury are good. 

"He has movement and sensation in all his limbs," Rice coach Mike Bloomgren said. "We're waiting on a CT scan confirmation. Thankfully, he's moving in the right direction. Anything we can do to help him, we will." 

Bloomgren was frustrated with the lack of a call on the injury. Replays appeared to show that Strnad made forcible contact with Green's head, but no targeting was called. 

"They said it was shoulder to shoulder," Bloomgren said. "I saw the jumbotron. It didn't appear that way to me." 

The Plano product completed three of his first five passes for 69 yards in the Owls' home opener against Wake Forest. He went down with 4:44 left in the first quarter with Rice down 14-0. 

Harvard graduate transfer quarterback Tom Stewart stepped in and completed 19-of-30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
