Welcome to Inside the Numbers, a weekly look at Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s comprehensive computer rankings. Each week, we take a deep dive into that week’s Texas high school football computer rankings to sort out the signal from the noise.

CLASS 6A

At The Top…A lot of shuffling here, including a new No. 1 in Humble Atascocita — the computer obviously liked their demolition of Katy Taylor. Katy is the new No. 2, setting up a tasty 1-vs.-2 matchup this week. Austin Westlake makes a leap to No. 4, while former No. 1 Galena Park North Shore tumbled to No. 6. Keep an eye on Arlington Martin, who jumped from No. 58 to No. 18 after their sensational win over Lake Travis…the flip side of that is that LT got clobbered in the rankings, going from No. 3 to No. 35.

Fastest Risers

Beaumont United — The Timberwolves’ dominating win over Houston St. Pius X made them the state’s biggest mover this week, jumping 105 spots from No. 171 to No. 66.

Killeen Shoemaker — A bona fide upset, Killeen Shoemaker was a 23-point underdog to San Angelo Central, which would explain why the Grey Wolves’ 54-21 victory over the Bobcats jumped them 100 spots from No. 175 to No. 75.

Spring Dekaney — Coming off a middling 5-5 season and facing Houston Heights on the road in the opener, the computer was pretty surprised by Dekaney’s 35-7 victory, so much so that the Wildcats rose 75 spots from No. 152 to No. 77.

Other notable risers…Keller Central (up 74 spots to No. 112); Tyler Lee (up 72 spots to No. 71); La Porte (up 66 spots to No. 139); Wolfforth Frenship (up 65 spots to No. 100)

Biggest Fallers

Richardson Pearce — Remember when Pearce stunned the state by beating Cedar Hill in the playoffs last year? The honeymoon might be over, as the Mustangs tumbled 88 spots from No. 100 to No. 188 after a 57-14 loss at the hands of Frisco Wakeland.

San Angelo Central — Yeah, that loss to Shoemaker did not impress the computer. The Bobcats are down 84 spots from No. 50 to No. 134.

Houston Heights — On the flip side of Dekaney’s big win is Heights’ bad loss, which dropped them 83 spots from No. 81 to No. 164.

Other notable fallers…Laredo Alexander (down 81 spots to No. 191); Haltom (down 72 spots to No. 129); Odessa (down 61 spots to No. 205); Clear Brook (down 55 spots to No. 200).

CLASS 5A

At The Top…Division I has a new top dog, as Alvin Shadow Creek leaps Highland Park for top honors after the Sharks’ impressive win over Humble Summer Creek. Everything else in DI is pretty chalky, though it’s notable that the computer really likes that Lancaster hung with Duncanville, jumping the Tigers from No. 11 to No. 9 despite the loss, and that Lufkin hung with Longview, as the Panthers move up a spot despite losing. In Division II, Aledo stays at the top even with a loss to Denton Guyer, but the gap has narrowed between them and the field. Port Neches-Groves is the big mover at the top, going from 12 to 7 after their impressive win over Silsbee. Keep an eye on Port Lavaca Calhoun, as the Sandcrabs are on the move.

Fastest Risers

Frisco Lebanon Trail — The Trailblazers earned just their second win as a varsity program with their 43-18 win over Fort Worth Southwest — despite being 34-point underdogs — and the computer took notice, leaping them 43 spots from No. 118 to No. 75 in the 5A DII rankings.

Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway — Even though it was a 5A over a 4A, T-M’s 46-7 throttling of Kingsville King was pretty unexpected (the Warriors were 16-point underdogs). That sent them rocketing up 38 spots from No. 103 to No. 65 in the 5A DII rankings.

Saginaw — If you beat a 6A regional finalist on the road in your opener, you’re going to make a leap. That’s the case for Saginaw, who took down Haltom 23-21 as 45-point underdogs! That sparked a 36-spot jump from No. 94 to No. 58 in the 5A DI rankings.

Other notable risers…Alice (up 35 spots to No. 44 in 5A DII); Frisco Independence (up 30 spots to No. 20 in 5A DI); Lubbock Monterey (up 30 spots to No. 24 in 5A DI).

Biggest Fallers

Fort Worth Southwest — Frisco Lebanon Trail had a great opener…which means Fort Worth Southwest had a not-so-great one. The Raiders tumbled 55 spots from No. 44 to No. 99 in the 5A Division II rankings.

Wichita Falls — The Coyotes were howling on Friday night, and not in a good way. Old High was a 31-point favorite over the still-very-new Fort Worth Chisholm Trail squad, which made their 29-21 loss all the worse. WF is down 35 spots from No. 43 to No. 78 in the 5A DII rankings.

Kaufman — This one is all about margin. The Lions were actually 4-point underdogs to Lindale in the season opener, but lost 45-10. The computer was unkind, dropping Kaufman 28 spots from No. 54 to No. 82 in the 5A DII rankings.

Other notable fallers…Fort Worth North Side (down 24 spots to No. 113 in 5A DII); Fort Worth Wyatt (down 23 spots to No. 93 in 5A DII); El Paso Eastlake (down 22 spots to No. 84 in 5A DI); Birdville (down 21 spots to No. 31 in 5A DI).

CLASS 4A

At The Top…It’s a three-team shuffle at the top of Division I, as Carthage and Argyle leap-frog Waco La Vega to form a 1-2-3 combo, respectively. Melissa made a big move this week, from No. 22 to No. 8, thanks to a 47-14 win over Argyle Liberty Christian that the computer considers a pretty big upset. Keep an eye on La Feria, too. In Division II, it’s still Pleasant Grove and everyone else, though the computer loves Lubbock Estacado’s win over Lubbock Coronado. West Orange-Stark lurks at No. 3 after edging Nederland.

Fastest Risers

Tyler Chapel Hill — Call it Riordan Magic, as new coach Jeff Riordan inspired the biggest move of the week. Chapel Hill was 31-point underdogs to Crandall, so the computer really liked the Bulldogs’ 42-0 win, jumping CH 38 spots from No. 81 to No. 43 in 4A DI.

Waxahachie Life — Another sizable underdog who won big, Waxahachie Life is up 25 spots from No. 49 to No. 24 in 4A DI after a 58-15 demolition of Ferris, despite entering the game as 9-point dogs.

Llano — The pride of the Hill Country showed out on Friday night, throttling Hondo and impressing the computer along the way, as Yellowjackets are up 25 spots from No. 43 to No. 18 in 4A DII.

Other notable risers…Dallas Hillcrest (up 21 spots to No. 63 in 4A DI); Hillsboro (up 20 spots to No. 39 in 4A DII); Little Cypress-Mauriceville (up 19 spots to No. 40 in 4A DI).

Biggest Fallers

Crandall — Yikes. Chapel Hill did some serious damage to the Pirates, dropping them 43 spots from No. 34 to No. 77 in 4A DI.

Kingsville King — Remember how impressed we were by Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway? The Brahmas were the victims here, dropping 35 spots from No. 46 to No. 81 in 4A DI.

Ferris — Yeah, it wasn’t a great night for the Yellowjackets. Their loss to Waxahachie Life dropped them 27 spots from No. 34 to No. 61 in 4A DII.

Other notable fallers…Hondo (down 25 spots to No. 50 in 4A DII); Stafford (down 22 spots to No. 65 in 4A DI);  Celina (down 21 spots to No. 35 in 4A DI).

CLASS 3A

At The Top…When you hand a team its first home loss in nearly a decade, the computer’s going to notice. That’s why Wall, who drubbed Mason at the Puncherdome and beat the Punchers for the first time at home since 2010, is the new No. 1 in 3A DI, up from No. 13. The computer also loves Jefferson, who clubbed Pittsburg to make a big leap. Same goes for Rockdale, who’s up to No. 7 in the state after upsetting Giddings. In 3A DII, it’s much chalkier — Newton edged Canadian for the top spot, but it’s a lot of the same in the top 10. Childress edges into the top 10 despite a loss to Bushland.

Fastest Risers

New Diana — The Eagles soared into the new season with a really impressive win over Harmony, entering the game as a 30-point underdog and leaving with a 30-point win (44-14). That has them up 36 spots from No. 62 to No. 26 in 3A DII.

Friona — Chieftains! Friona’s off on the good foot with a 61-6 win over Farwell (who was a 6-point favorite), and they’re up 34 spots from No. 56 to No. 22 in 3A DII.

Bangs — The Dragons went on the road and brought home a 44-7 win over Early as a 15-point underdog. That win lept them 30 spots from No. 87 to No. 57 in 3A DII.

Other notable risers…Winnsboro (up 29 spots to No. 59 in 3A DI); Warren (up 28 spots to No. 78 in 3A DI); Hempstead (up 27 spots to No. 51 in 3A DI); Lago Vista (up 26 spots to No. 43 in 3A DI).

Biggest Fallers

Winona — If you’re a 30-point favorite, and you lose by 33, the computer’s not going to like it. Such is the case with Winona, whose loss to Winnsboro tumbled them 34 spots from No. 35 to No. 69 in 3A DII.

Early — The Longhorns had a rough start to the year, as their loss to Bangs dropped them 30 spots from No. 76 to No. 106 in 3A DII.

Blue Ridge — Eek. The Tigers’ 46-13 loss to Wichita Falls City View did them no favors, dropping them 26 spots from No. 48 to No. 74 in 3A DII.

Other notable fallers…Brownfield (down 24 spots to No. 70 in 3A DI); Gilmer Harmony (down 24 spots to No. 39 in 3A DII); Blanco (down 22 spots to No. 38 in 3A DII).

CLASS 2A

At The Top…Refugio continues to reign supreme in Division I, but they’ve got new company in San Augustine and Panhandle, who made leaps into the top three. Mason tumbled from No. 2 to No. 10, while Tenaha jumps up to No. 6 from No. 9. Mart is still the top dog in Division II, while Stratford and Falls City swap spots at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Keep an eye on Tahoka, who’s up six spots to No. 13 this week.

Fastest Risers

Munday — Remember the Moguls? After an 0-10 season in 2018, Munday’s back on the good foot, crushing Olney 52-0 and making the biggest leap this week — 30 spots from No. 82 to No. 52 in 2A DII.

Brackettville — A dominating road win over a good Woodsboro team will do some good in the eyes of the computer, and that’s what the Tigers did, jumping 25 spots from No. 41 to No. 16 in 2A Division I.

New Home — An under-the-radar upset this week was New Home’s 42-26 win over Hale Center…especially considering Hale Center beat NH 45-6 last year. The win has the Leopards up 23 spots from No. 85 to No. 62 in 2A DII.

Other notable risers…Thrall (up 21 spots to No. 49 in 2A DI); Groveton (up 16 spots to No. 18 in 2A DI); Dawson (up 16 spots from No. 40 in 2A DII); Trenton (up 15 spots to No. 63 in 2A DI).

Biggest Fallers

Woodsboro — A 64-6 loss at home to Brackettville is not a great start. The Eagles are down 24 spots from No. 30 to No. 54 in the 2A DII rankings.

Farwell — It’s not that the Steers lost to Friona, a 3A team; it’s that they lost by 55. They’re down 24 spots from No. 22 to No. 46 in the 2A DII rankings.

Cushing — The Bearcats were 23-point favorites over Chilton to open the season, but lost 24-14. That’s…a problem. They dropped 23 spots from No. 56 to No. 79 in 2A DI.

CLASS 1A

At The Top…No changes at the No. 1 spots, as McLean and Richland Springs maintain top of the table status in Division I and Division II, respectively. Keep an eye on Grandfalls-Royalty in Division II and Union Hill in Division I.

Fastest Risers

Rochelle — Well that was unexpected! The Hornets were 39-point underdogs to private school power Stephenville FAITH, and took home a shocking 60-33 win. They’re up a whopping 31 spots from No. 49 to No. 18 in 1A Division II.

Covington — What happens when you’re a 23-point underdog and you win 62-12? You jump 24 spots like the Owls did with their win over Kopperl, moving from No. 63 to No. 39 in 1A Division I.

Other notable risers…Saint Jo (up 21 spots to No. 28 in 1A DI); Loraine (up 19 spots to No. 13 in 1A DII); Bluff Dale (up 19 spots to No. 26 in 1A DII).

Biggest Fallers

Kopperl — Yeah, that Covington loss ain’t good. The Eagles tumbled 30 spots from No. 20 to No. 50 in 1A Division II.

Fannindel — Opening the season with a loss to Saint Jo isn’t exactly going to impress the computer. Fannindel is down 22 spots from No. 14 to No. 36 in 1A DII.

Robert Lee — Water Valley is a decent team, but the Steers’ 53-8 loss is ugly in the eyes of the computer. They’re down 22 spots from No. 31 to No. 53 in 1A DI.
