Every year when the summer edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football comes out, fans and media alike look at the teams we have at the top of the pre-season rankings to get an idea of who likely makes the trip to Arlington to play for a state title at AT&T Stadium in December.

While the teams ranked highly in the pre-season are there for a good reason, we all know there are always a few mystery guests that pop up with deep playoff runs and sometimes state titles when the season wraps up.  Who are those teams you need to keep an eye on in 2019? We’ve got you covered at DCTF as we bring you our 2019 Hipster Picks to keep in your back pocket as you casually drop them into conversation with your friends from time to time, so once they make that deep run, you can look like a Texas high school football genius!

Smyer

There’s lots of optimism in Smyer as new head coach Scott Funke’s squad has better numbers and depth than in the past. Seven starters are back on both sides of the ball and although the Bobcats are transitioning to a spread offense, they’ll still rely heavily on the running game. 4-2A Division II is wide open as Ralls was a surprise district champion a year ago, there’s no reason to think Smyer with their returning experience can’t be in the mix for a step forward in 2019.

Quanah

Matt Garvin’s squad welcomes back fourteen starters from a 6-5 squad and although getting past Wellington and Wheeler for one of the top two spots in the district, the Indians could be a real thorn in the side of teams as a third place squad. Quanah’s above average team speed will give them an advantage and if one of their three candidates to land the QB job emerges they could be a real surprise.

Hubbard

The Jaguars despite declining enrollment that is putting them closer and closer to the six-man cutoff level have managed to remain more than competitive under HC Russell Anderson. With ten returning starters on offense and nine on the defensive of the ball and just five graduating seniors the Jags will be one of the state’s most experienced teams. Hubbard won’t overtake defending state champions Mart in district play, but if they can get into the second place spot in the district they could potentially win multiple playoff games.

Premont

The Cowboys don’t have visions of a state title or even a regional title, after all they just revived their football program two years ago and 2018 was their first season back in a district. Ruben Cantu’s squad did manage two victories a year ago and showed signs of being competitive. The bar could be raised in 2019 as PHS returns eight starters on both sides of the ball and they’ve got a dynamic playmaker in RB Trey Davila. Don’t be surprised if Premont pulls off a big surprise and sneaks into the playoffs in 2019, which would be a big story down on the Texas coast.
