The 2019 Texas 7-on-7 State Championships are in the books, and for most teams, their performance in College Station won’t change how we view them as they head into the fall season. But there are a few teams that moved the needle some for us and a few that confirmed what we thought about them in our pre-season look at the state. So today we bring you our post 7-on-7 State Tournament Stock Report!

Stock Up

Poth: The Pirates rolled to the Division III title on Friday (posting a 5-0 mark) and totally looked like a team that has potential to make some noise in 3A Division II Region IV. Jeff Luna’s squad was 10-2 a year ago and with eight returning offensive starters we figured this team would be good, but if they can develop along the defensive line this could be a real dangerous team in November.

Dumas: The Demons travelled a long way down to College Station and made their presence known with a solid 4-2 mark and a run to the quarterfinals in Division II. We pegged this team at number 13 in our pre-season 4A Division I rankings, but with fifteen returning starters from an 8-3 squad we may need to re-evaluate the Demons as a top 10 team.

Cy Falls: With just nine total starters back and only 15 letterman returning, we pegged the Golden Eagles to be on the outside looking in of the always competitive 17-6A race in Cy-Fair ISD. Cy Falls was a solid 9-3 in 2018, but Chris Brister’s squad surprised many by rattling off six straight wins in College Station on Friday and Saturday before falling in the Division I semifinals to eventual champion A&M Consolidated.

Honorable Mention: Comfort, Crane, Jourdanton, Waco Connally, Lufkin, Manvel

Stock Holding Steady

Falls City: If you watch Falls City in the fall you might not think 7-on-7 is their game, but Britt Hart’s squad plays the summer game quite well, posting a 5-2 record on the weekend and advancing all the way to the semifinals in Division III bracket. The Beavers didn’t do anything to make us rethink their No. 2 ranking in 2A-Division II in the summer edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Texarkana Pleasant Grove: The Hawks are the best passing Wing-T team I’ve ever seen and they showed once again this weekend they are as deadly in 7-on-7 as they are in real football, going 6-2 and falling in the Division II championship game for the second straight year. PGHS is led by a three-year starter at QB in Ben Harmon and they have skill all over the place, led by BYU commit RB Bruce Garrett. Once they get the big guys in the trenches to join in the fun, this is a team that’s a clear favorite in 4A Division II.

Southlake Carroll: After going 13-1 in Riley Dodge’s first year and relying on a big offensive line and stout ground attack, the Dragons look to take to the air more with talented sophomore QB Quin Ewers leading the attack alongside Texas A&M commit TE Blake Smith and two way-star, Clemson commit RJ Mickens. Carroll went 7-1 on the weekend, getting all the way to the Division I title game before falling to A&M Consolidated. The big question may be the status of Mickens, who was injured early on in the championship game.

Honorable Mention: Palmer, Tidehaven, Melissa, China Spring, Katy, Lake Travis

Stock Down

Sonora: It was a struggle for Sonora to simply to qualify for the 7-on-7 State Tournament this year and the young Broncos went 0-3 on the opening day of the tournament Thursday. They rebounded a bit Friday, upsetting Dublin in the opening round of bracket play, but were then eliminated by Bremond to finish the state tournament a disappointing 1-4. New head coach Kevin Sherrill will need patience from the community as the Broncos could be trying to retool on the fly.

Stephenville: The ‘Jackets had a powerful offense all summer during qualifying but they were let down by their defense in all three of their losses as they left with just a 1-3 mark. New head coach Sterling Doty is a Stephenville alum and knows that expectations are high, but does the talent on hand match the expectations of a rabid fan base?

Arlington Bowie: The Vols return half of their starters from last year’s playoff team, but they didn’t instill a ton of confidence this weekend with a bit of a lackluster 1-3 performance. Most have Bowie picked fourth in District 4-6A, but they’ll have to hold off a couple of up and coming teams to remain in the playoff picture.

Holding Steady, but Barely: Buffalo, Arp, Brownwood, Pleasanton, Temple, Dickinson
