Texas Tech QB McLane Carter will transfer for senior season

Texas Tech quarterack McLane Carter will transfer from the program after the conclusion of spring practice, he announced in a statement on Twitter.

Carter is expected to be a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.

His decision leaves Texas Tech with three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: sophomore Alan Bowman, junior Jett Duffey and sophomore Xavier Martin. The Red Raiders will also add San Angelo Central quarterback Maverick McIvor this summer.

Carter was the opening day starter a season ago after winning a quarterback battle over Alan Bowman and Jett Duffey. However, Carter suffered a high ankle sprain early in the opener against Ole Miss that eventually kept him out for most of the season.

He later started the final game of the season against Baylor and played well, but failed to lead the Red Raiders to bowl eligibility following a 35-24 loss to the Bears. In two seasons as a Red Raider, Carter completed 52.6 percent of his passes for 677 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Carter previously helped lead Gilmer High School to a perfect 16-0 season and 4A-Division II state championship in 2014.
