Cypress Ranch starts interviews
Reports are that as many as 10 candidates were brought in this week to interview for the vacant HFC position that was opened when Gene Johnson took the Waller job shortly after spring break. There hasn’t been much discussion on candidates, but one rumored contender is a head coach from a powerhouse program in the San Antonio area.

Alvin hires Tim Teykl
After an incredibly lengthy process, Alvin ISD named University of Houston director of high school relations Tim Teykl as the next head football coach at Alvin High School last Wednesday. Teykl had spent the last two seasons on the staff at Houston and prior to that had spent 26 years at Rosenberg Terry, 25 of those seasons as the head coach compiling a 155-114-2 record. Teykl will look to turn a struggling Alvin program around that went 0-10 a year ago.

Crosby narrows the field
Crosby brought in six candidates late last week to interview for its vacant HFC/AD job and it appears that the field has been narrowed to a pair of finalists who are being brought in Tuesday for the final round of interviews. The two finalists are two coordinators, one from the Houston area and one from the Coastal Bend. My sources are indicating the coordinator from the Coastal Bend is the probable candidate to be named, likely early next week.

McGregor hires Mike Shields
Late Thursday night McGregor named Terrell head coach Mile Shields as its next HFC/AD. Shields has 17 seasons of head coaching experience posting a 123-72 mark with stops at Italy, Red Oak and Terrell. He spent the past five seasons at Terrell posting a 32-24 mark.

Cordell steps down at Sonora
In a surprise move on Wednesday night, Sonora head coach Jeff Cordell resigned his post after two seasons and a 17-7 record. Cordell, who is best known for leading Gainesville to a state title in 2003 and a state title game in 2005, has a 79-56 overall record with stints at Gainesville, Greenville, Andrews and Sonora.

Revolving door continues at Somerville
The revolving door at Somerville continues as head coach Greg Bagby resigned his post after just one season at the helm and a 1-9 record. Somerville’s revolving door at the head football coach position has to be concerning and at some point administration in the district has to decide if it wants to become a place football coaches want to work or should probably just drop football altogether. Since 2004, the longest tenured head coach was Larry Cone’s three year stint from 2007-2009. In 2019 it will be on head coach number six in six years, James Richardson in 2014, Rex Sharp for one game in 2015, Jesse House final nine games of 2015 and 2016, Darby House in 2017, Greg Bagby in 2018 and whomever they hire in 2019.

Campbell decides to drop to six-man football
Campbell ISD decided on Thursday that due to a lack of numbers and proper facilities, it will play an outlaw six-man schedule in 2019. The Indians made their debut playing 11-man football in 2018 and things were, as expected, very difficult. It will be interesting post realignment in February if Campbell’s enrollment will place them in 1A or will the small district that has been growing have a 2A enrollment that would force them to continue playing an outlaw six-man schedule (much like Fort Hancock in far West Texas).

7-on-7 SQT play begins in two weeks
The Texas 7-on-7 Qualifying Season kicks off on April 27 with a Division I State Qualifier in Frisco, for the full schedule and information on 7-on-7 in Texas go to http://www.texas7on7.org

The Frisco SQT will take place at the Star in Frisco and due to re-sodding of the Dallas Cowboys practice field, two pools will take place at Wakeland High School. Pools for the SQT will be released on DCTF on Monday April 22.

With Spring Break in the rearview mirror it’s time to start looking ahead to Spring Football across the state!! Class 5A and Class 6A schools have the option to participate in spring practice and if they elect to do so they start fall camp a week later than 4A and below programs and 5A/6A schools that elected to not have spring ball. Schools that also choose to have spring ball also only have one preseason scrimmage instead of two. Below is a list of dates for spring football games across the state, if we are missing one send to matt.stepp@texasfootball.com!
