UTSA kicker Jared Sackett will transfer from the program, a university official confirmed on Saturday. Sackett will have to sit out the 2019 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Sackett was poised to be arguably the top returning player on UTSA’s roster next season. He and longsnapper Grant Merka Jr. were the only returning Roadrunners to earn any All-Conference-USA mention.

The former walk-on completed 14 of his 19 kicks, including all five of his attempts from within 40 yards and all 18 of his extra point attempts. As a true freshman, Sackett earned USA Today Freshman All-America status after hitting a UTSA record 19 field goals in just 10 games. For his efforts, Sackett was named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist both seasons.

Sackett has reportedly completed a visit to Arkansas with former SMU head coach Chad Morris.

With Sackett out, the field goal duties will likely shift to rising redshirt junior Hunter Duplessis. Duplessis handled kickoff duties a year ago. He kicked 29 kickoffs with a 56.3 yards per kickoff average and seven touchbacks.

The Roadrunners’ special teams unit is in the midst of a full rebuild. In addition to Sackett, UTSA must replace top punter Yannis Routsas, top punt returner Greg Campbell and top kick returner Matt Guidry.
