Former Texas running back Kyle Porter will join Houston as a graduate transfer, the program announced on Wednesday.

Porter will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Cougars and be immediately eligible.

The rising redshirt junior was a solid rotation piece in his first two years on the 40 Acres. In Tom Herman’s first season, Porter led all Longhorns running backs with 72 carries, but mustered just 231 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, Porter carried the ball just once and utilized his redshirt season.

Herman spoke about the possibility of Porter transferring midway through the season. Porter appeared in his fourth game early in the year, but opted to redshirt the rest of the year to preserve his second remaining year of eligibility.

“[Porter’s] been nothing but a do-right guy in every facet of his life since we’ve been here,” Herman said in October. “So we want to make sure we’re doing right by him too.”

Porter is the 22nd addition in the 2019 signing class at Houston. He was previously recruited by new head coach Dana Holgorsen during the latter’s time at West Virginia.

Before Texas, Porter was a standout running back at Katy. He helped lead Katy to title games in all four of his seasons, and was later named an All-American, All-State and an honorable mention Super Team member after rushing for 1,938 yards and 36 touchdowns as a senior.

Porter is a smart and effective running back who found favor with the Texas coaching staff because of his steady play. However, his running style never quite fit in Herman’s system. Now, Porter should slide right into the running back rotation alongside Patrick Carr.

Holgorsen produced several strong running backs during his time at West Virginia, including NFL running back Wendell Smallwood. Porter will have the surrounding talent to shine, if he can start producing at his high school levels.

Texas football lost three running backs during the offseason with Porter’s departure. Leading rusher Tre Watson is headed to the NFL after graduating. Toneil Carter announced that he will transfer to Sam Houston State earlier in the offseason. However, that should open the door for blue-chip running back Keontay Ingram to become a featured running back.
