UTSA football officially announced Jeff Kastl as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Monday. Kastl previously served as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

Kastl replaces offensive coordinator Al Borges, who was reportedly relieved of his duties in November after just one season. However, Borges still remains on staff as an offensive assistant.

“[Kastl is] a dedicated coach with a bright mind and he has done an outstanding job with our receivers and as our passing game coordinator during his time at UTSA,” UTSA coach Frank Wilson said in a statement. “Jeff is a rising star in the coaching world and he will have a positive and immediate impact on our program in his new role.”

Kastl is the third offensive coordinator in five years under Frank Wilson at UTSA. The Roadrunners fired Frank Scelfo in 2017 after two seasons. Kastl has been wide receivers coach since Wilson arrived.

Kastl is tasked with fixing an offense that ranked as one of the worst in college football. The Roadrunners ranked dead last nationally in total offense per game, and became the first time since 2014 to average fewer than four yards per play. The Roadrunners’ 14.2 points per game was better than only Rutgers among FBS teams.

The passing game, which Kastl was responsible for, was especially bad. Four quarterbacks combined to complete just 50.5 percent of their passes for 1,918 yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a pitiful 4.7 yards per pass attempt. Only one wide receiver posted more than 250 yards.

UTSA ranked No. 117 nationally with 159.8 passing yards per game. Five of the 12 teams behind the Roadrunners were option teams. UTSA was one of three teams nationally to average fewer than five yards per pass attempt, along with Rutgers and Central Michigan. Those three teams combined to go 5-31 last season.

Other than demoting Borges and promoting Kastl, UTSA has made no other offensive staff changes.

Kastl played quarterback at Michigan under Lloyd Carr. He came to UTSA with Wilson from LSU, where he worked as an offensive analyst. Kastl also had stints at Michigan as a defensive analyst, Auburn as a grad assistant and Ashland as a position coach.
