Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News broke the news that Colby Carthel will be the new head coach at Stephen F. Austin, with multiple confirming reports shortly thereafter.

Carthel has been the head coach of Texas A&M-Commerce since 2013 compiling an impressive 59-18 overall record and a 36-8 record in the Lone Star Conference, and winning three LSC championships as head coach of the Lions.

He has also led the Lions to four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs and a national championship in 2017. Commerce also appeared in the Live United Texarkana Bowl in 2013 and the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in 2014.

Prior to being named the head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce, he spent seven years as the defensive coordinator for West Texas A&M. He was instrumental in turning the Buffs into one the top teams in the Lone Star conference and the region as they captured four LSC championships and made an appearance in the postseason each of his seven seasons including a trip to the NCAA DII semifinals. As an assistant coach and head coach, Carthel has made 12 consecutive trips to the NCAA DII postseason.

The SFA job came open when former head coach Clint Conque stepped down in August. Interim head coach Jeff Byrd led the Lumberjacks to a 2-8 overall record and a 2-7 record in the Southland Conference. The Lumberjacks announced they would begin a nationwide search for a new head coach following their 35-23 loss to Northwestern State in the Battle for Chief Caddo to end their regular season.
