Texas A&M punter Braden Mann became the first American since 2012 to win the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter, at the College Football Awards Show on Thursday night in Atlanta.

Mann beat out Cincinnati punter James Smith and Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky for the honor. Wishnowsky previously won the award in 2016.

The Cy-Fair product is posting one of the top seasons by a specialist in the nation. Mann averages 51.1 yards per punt, and is the only punter nationally to clear the 50-yard mark. His season average is on pace to shatter Drew Kaser’s record of 47.5 yards per punt. Some of his punts have traveled outrageous distances, including an 82-yarder against Kentucky and 73-yarder against Clemson.

However, Mann has been accurate too. Out of his 47 points, only nine have gone for touchbacks. Eleven have been fair caught, and 18 punts fell within the 20-yard line.

The do-everything punter even added four solo tackles and a forced fumble on special teams.

This is Mann’s first year as the full-time punter at Texas A&M. He waited two years as a kickoff specialist behind Shane Tripucka. Mann played soccer in high school and was named an Under Armour All-American as a specialist.

The Ray Guy Award is staying in the state of Texas for a second straight season. Texas punter Michael Dickson won the award a year ago. Baylor’s Danny Sepulveda is the only other player from a Texas school to win the nation’s highest punting honor.
