Hutto (10-0) vs. Angleton (10-1) 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waller’s Waller ISD Stadium

Two top-tier offenses in the state of Texas clash and the winner will likely be the favorite to come out of 5A DI Region III. Hutto never gave Austin McCallum a chance last week, taking down the Knights 58-7. One of the state’s top quarterbacks, Chase Griffin, threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns against McCallum and has led a Hippo offense that has averaged 54.9 points per game. The Hippos' ability to successfully move the chains in their Air Raid offense has also opened up holes for speedy running back Chux Nwabuko. Despite being just a sophomore, defensive end Landyn Watson is the anchor of Hutto’s 4-2-5 defense.

Angleton hasn’t put up near the numbers as Hutto but their Wing-T offense will give the Hippo defense a different look. Quarterback Seth Cosme (1,651 passing yards, 18 TD) has played better games than he did in last week’s 55-32 over Kingwood Park when he threw for just 162 yards and no touchdowns. The primary source of offensive production for the Wildcats comes from their stable of running backs led by burners Jordan Jones (1,200 rushing yards, 13 TD) and Kendel Archie (964 rushing yards, 15 TD).

Cypress Ranch (11-0) vs. Spring Westfield (10-1) 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Aldine’s Thorne Stadium

Cy Ranch and Spring Westfield meet in a heavyweight battle of Mustangs in Aldine. Ranch had to grind out a 24-10 win over Hendrickson last week who stayed neck-and-neck with them for the majority of the game. The Cypress version of the Mustangs utilize an I-Formation offense and lean on sophomore back Willie Eldridge (693 rushing yards, 11 TD) who amassed 118 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win. Cy Ranch’s 3-4 defense has been stout and allowed an average of just 14 points a game.

Westfield — whose only loss this season came at the hands of North Shore — has had the majority of their success thanks to their incredible defense. The 4-3 defense has allowed an average of just 6.7 points per game in their 10 wins this season. Linebacker Franklin Montgomery, who won First Team All-District honors a year ago, has been a stout run-stuffer who has a nose for finding the football. The Westfield offense uses a variety of different schemes but most of the offensive production runs through quarterback Ra’Quon Washington (1,523 passing yards, 15 TD) who has filled in nicely for injured starter Terrance Gipson.

Gunter (11-0) vs. Lexington (8-2) 6:00 p.m. Friday at Mexia’s Blackcat Field

Gunter is as hot as any team in the state and the Tigers have won 42 of their last 43 games. All signs point to another deep playoff run for the Tigers, however, they will have an early hurdle facing Lexington. The Tigers have outscored their last five opponents 244 to 34 and haven’t had any sort of scare this season. The Tigers signature pistol offense essentially runs through feature back Dylan Jantz (743 rushing yards, 262 receiving yards) who can do it all. Quarterback Ethan Everson isn’t a volume passer in the offense but has been successful when neede,d completing 54 of his 89 passes for 926 yards and eight touchdowns. Gunter primarily uses a 4-2 defense which has allowed an average of just five points a game. The one wrinkle is that Gunter is a bit banged up, having lost Braiden Clopton for the year already.

Lexington routed Palmer 57-12 in the bi-district round last week. The high-scoring affair wasn’t an outlier for the Eagles who now have scored over 40 points in seven games this season. Leading the offensive charge is feature back Ja’Kobe "Speedy" Cooper, who has averaged 171.6 yards per game. Offensive tackle Cade Hawley — who graded at 93-percent last season — has made Cooper’s job much easier, opening up gaping holes. Middle linebacker Aaron Allert has a high football IQ and has the speed to get from sideline-to-sideline in a hurry. Strong safety Caleb Meyer plays behind Allert and is a ballhawk.

Lufkin (10-1) vs. Frisco Lone Star (9-2) 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s McLane Stadium

Lufkin took care of business against McKinney North, 50-27, last week but gave up an uncharacteristic amount of points, as the Panthers have had one of the most fearsome defenses in the area this season. Nose guard Carl Williams, weighing in at a massive 305 pounds, is incredibly strong, quick for his size and has received FBS offers from across the country. Junior safety Jerrin Thompson is the vocal leader on the defensive side of the ball and has the speed to keep pace with just about any receiver he faces. The Panthers use a run-heavy spread offense that can run the ball down opposing teams throat with feature back JaLynn Polk at the helm.

Lone Star has been a bit of a sleeper team this season, but the Rangers have taken care of business with their only two losses coming to perennial power Highland Park and (9-2) The Colony. Darrin Smith is the feature back in the Lone Star spread offense and is slippery and able to consistently shake off tackles. The Rangers aren’t afraid to air it out though with big-bodied receiver Marvin Mims out wide. Lone Star manhandled Mansfield Legacy 41-6 last week, a testament to their stout defense. The Rangers’ defense has allowed just 29 points in their last three games and linebackers Jaylon Ford and Torren Pittman are run-stuffers that could give Polk some trouble.

Huntsville (10-1) vs. Manvel (9-2) Noon Friday at Houston’s NRG Stadium

What a way to start a great day of football off at NRG Stadium with a very talented pairing. Hunstville — whose only loss came to defending state champion College Station — has outscored their last four opponents 225 to 21. The staple of the Hornet squad is their stout defensive play which has playmakers scattered across their 4-2-5 defense. Massive defensive end T’Vondre Sweat headlines the unit and has put opposing quarterbacks under pressure all season. Quarterback Matthew Southern (2,560 passing yards, 32 TDs) leads the Hornet one-back offense that isn’t reluctant to air it out. Running back Jaeryne Green is a physical running back that uses his massive size to break tackles.

Manvel found themselves in a shootout against Barbers Hill last week, but the Mavericks were able to pull away in the second half and notch a 62-42 win. Joshua Coltrin put together an incredible performance, amassing 380 passing yards and four touchdowns. The Mavericks have also been able to overwhelm teams with their running game which has two elusive backs in Ladarius Owens (1,195 rushing yards, 17 TD) and Garrison Johnson (868 rushing yards, 22 TD). The two backs have the luxury of running behind a physical offensive line including Texas A&M commit Layden Robinson. Outside linebacker Jermaine Brown (62 tackles, 4.5 sacks) flies to the football and will need to be a disrupter against solid signal-caller Southern.
