Texas football will face off in a marquee home-and-home nonconference series against SEC opponent Georgia, the program announced on Monday. Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium will host the series on Sept. 2, 2028. The matchup will move to Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 1, 2029.

This is just the latest big-time matchup Texas has scheduled for the 2020s. The Longhorns also have series against Alabama (2022-23), Michigan (2024, 2027) and Ohio State (2025-26) scheduled in the coming years. Texas also plays against LSU the next two years.

The Longhorns have long been aggressive in scheduling marquee matchups against nationally-relevant opponents. Just this year, Texas played against USC and picked up a big win on national television. These games give Texas an opportunity to boost its resume and national profile.

Georgia has quickly ascended to national power after hiring former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart as head coach. The Bulldogs earned a trip to the national championship game in Smart’s second season. Georgia sits at 9-1 in 2018, with a lone loss to No. 13 LSU.

These two teams have played only once since the Vietnam War. In the last matchup in 1984, No. 7 Georgia scored the game's lone touchdown with 3:22 remaining to knock off No. 2 Texas 10-9 in the Cotton Bowl. Texas has a 3-1 series advantage.

Of course, there’s no telling what these two teams could look like when these games actually take place. There will be players playing in the second game that are currently seven years old. Since the matchups are a decade out, there’ no guarantee that either Tom Herman or Smart could be on the sideline for the game.

Georgia is the sixth SEC team that Texas will play since realignment in 2012. Four of them involve teams in the SEC West. There are no plans to play former Big 12 rival Texas A&M at this time.
