SAN ANTONIO -- There’s good news and there’s bad news for UTSA football fans. The good news is that UTSA is coming off a bye week, so they’ve had extra time to prepare for their next opponent and have gotten an extended resting period. The bad news is that their next opponent is UAB, who sits atop the C-USA west standings at 7-1 (5-0, C-USA).

UAB is favored by 21 points in the matchup so UTSA has some serious work to do if they’re going to avoid a second three-game losing streak this season. After getting blown out by Louisiana Tech 31-3 on homecoming weekend, UTSA fell to Southern Mississippi to drop their conference record to 2-2. Head coach Frank Wilson met with the media to discuss the struggling offense, the bye week and what they expect from UAB.

UTSA’s offense has struggled mightily this season, and has averaged less than 250 yards of total offense per game. The UTSA offense averages less than 100 rushing yards per game and no starting quarterback has been able to throw for more than 200 yards in a single game. The offense is also dead last in the FBS in yards per offensive play at 3.77 yards per play.

To put that in perspective, no team has averaged less than four yards per play since 2014. Freshman quarterback Jordan Weeks made his first start against the Golden Eagles, but his start didn’t spark the offense like the coaching staff had hoped. With four games left on the season, time is running out for the offense to find their groove.

“It’s an urgency,” said Wilson. “We cannot continue to wallow down here, and we have to find a way to generate drives and points. Enough is enough.”

UTSA desperately needed the bye week as the offense had been looking bleak and things were starting to spiral downward. Getting an extra week to regroup and prepare for the next game is always a good thing but having to play UAB is not.

UAB is absolutely rolling right now as they come into the matchup on a six-game win streak. Their only loss came in week two of the season. But since then, they’ve been unstoppable. The Blazers are an undefeated 5-0 in C-USA play and two of their last three wins were shutout victories.

“They (UAB) are a talented team,” said Wilson. “They are balanced team that throws and runs the ball equally as effectively and have a quarterback that doesn’t give the ball away. They’re a very veteran team as a whole.”

UTSA has a very young team compared to UAB, but Wilson believes the talent is there on his team to get the job done. The Roadrunners will take on the Blazers in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 3.
