Strawn's statement

The biggest news item came out of Jayton where defending Division II champion Strawn hung 50 points on defending Division I champ Borden County and, even more amazing, held the Coyotes scoreless and ended the game at halftime, snapping Borden County's 31-game win streak. Julian Fraga had a big night for Strawn, logging 178 of his team’s 245 yards of offense including five rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. Both teams face tough opponents again this week as Strawn hosts state-ranked Division I squad Milford in the 1A game of the week, and Borden County hosts a surging White Deer squad on Thursday night in Lockney.

Seizing the moment

Motley County pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the week, toppling previously unbeaten Crowell 101-78. Matadors RB Kyler Degan ran for 410 yards and 8 touchdowns on 29 carries and added another touchdown receiving and 16 tackles in the win. Crowell QB Seth Beardon threw for 422 yards and 8 touchdowns in the losing effort.

Speaking of great performances: Aspermont’s Rowdy Bradley topped the 300 yards rushing mark for the fourth straight week as the Hornets upset Knox City 64-40. Bradley notched 384 yards and 7 touchdowns on 28 carries, and is putting together a cade for 1A Player of the Year – in four games, he's run for 1,368 yards and 21 touchdowns. Oh, and he has 53 tackles and an interception on defense.

Abbott’s Paxton Miller hit paydirt from eight yards out with 1:46 left in the game to push the Panthers to a 40-39 win over Bryson. Paxton ended the night with 225 yards and 3 touchdowns rushing and 16 tackles in the win.

Perfection watch

White Deer and Sterling City, both sitting at 4-0 on the season, cracked the Texas Football Class 1A Division I rankings for the first time with wins, while Blum and Knox City took their second losses of the year to fall out of the top 10.

May survived a scare by Fort Worth THESA to stay undefeated with a 39-31 win, remaining in the top 10. Ira is quietly sitting at 4-0 and lurking just outside the rankings with convincing wins over Happy and Water Valley.

Evant moves to 4-0 on the season after their 59-52 triple-overtime win over Blum. The Elks will face another tough opponent this week — Richland Springs.

In Division II, Whitharral enters the top 10 with a 54-8 win over Whiteface. Kody Gonzales ran for 241 yards and 5 touchdowns and added 62 yards and a TD receiving in the mercy-rule victory.

Maybe the two least-talked-about undefeated teams are both in Division II. Blanket (4-0), led by RB Logan Wheeler, is coming of a virtual bye week  after a forfeit win from Three Way. Meanwhile, new UIL school Bluff Dale (4-0) defeated Lingleville 48-0, meaning the Bobcats have outscored their opponents 202-48 this season.
