COLLEGE STATION -- Though it wasn’t a flawless performance, No. 22 Texas A&M took care of business in week 3, routing ULM 48-10. The Aggies will now travel to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 1 Alabama in what will be a very tough test.

Texas A&M had their weekly press conference Monday, here are some takeaways from the availability.

Offensive Line improved from last season, but still has some kinks

Through three games, the A&M offensive line has looked leaps and bounds better than they did last season. Keaton Sutherland called the offensive play last season “below average” on Monday and said that this year’s line has done a better job. Kellen Mond attributed that improvement to consistency in their lineup as last year the coaching staff would shuffle up the lineup throughout a game depending on performances and mistakes.

“I think that’s been huge this year, they’re really getting comfortable at their own position instead of one guy making a mistake and then getting tossed or shuffled out of the lineup," Mond said. Consistency is really the biggest thing.”

Jimbo Fisher acknowledged that though there has been improvement, they need to continue to develop as they will face some stout defensive fronts.

“Anytime the quarterback gets hit ever you want to get better. We’ve got to continue to grow and get better and I think the biggest thing is not oversetting and not knowing where your help is,” Fisher said. “Everyone always says offensive line is so physical, well it is but a lot of times it’s mental mistakes.”

Running Back By Committee

Entering the season, all of the running back hype surrounded Second Team Preseason All-SEC selection Trayveon Williams. Though Williams has been the feature back and has been one of the best backs in the SEC, the Aggies have also shown they have a stable of other backs.

“They’ve looked good so far and we’ve got to have depth in what we are trying to do because we’ve got to take touches off of Trayveon as the season goes on,” Fisher said. “These young guys are really starting to emerge and Corbin he [Corbin] looked really good the other night. He’s going to have to help us and I know that he can help us.”

Senior Kwame Etwi and freshman Jashaun Corbin have shown significant flashes and that they can effectively tote the ball to help take some of the load off of Williams. Corbin had a breakout performance coming in late on Saturday, and rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown on Saturday against ULM.

“It wasn’t a surprise at all he’s got all the talent in the world. He’s got it all,” fullback Cullen Gillaspia said of Corbin’s performance. “Jashaun is so fast and he’s got all kinds of moves, he’s a very talented runner for us. He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”

Increased Focus on Limiting Big Plays in Secondary

The A&M interior has been extremely stout this season in defending against opposing runs. The maroon and white have allowed just an average of 79.7 yards per game and held their opponents to 3.2 yards per rush. Where the Aggies have struggled is in there secondary. The unit has looked good in coverage at times but has gotten burned by the deep ball several times — most notably against Clemson.

“We’ve got to take away some of the small mistakes that we have. Bad eyes, small assignments that we miss,” Nickelback DeShawn Capers-Smith said. “It all comes down to practice, we have to work on things in the film room.”

The Alabama offense has been extremely potent thus far with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at the helm. The unit has averaged 308 yards per game in the air and four passing touchdowns per game. They have also used a lot of deep balls to get that yardage and average 16.5 yards per catch. The Aggie secondary will need to get the kinks worked out before Alabama poses a very tough test.
