For the second season in a row, Tom Herman and Texas football look for a rebound in week 2, facing off against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Darrell K. Royal Stadium.

After losing a shocker in Maryland 34-29 in Week 1, the Longhorns will again attempt to bounce back at home against a non-Power 5 opponent. The Golden Hurricane enter the game 1-0 after defeating Central Arkansas a week ago.

Texas vs. Tulsa preview

Assignment football in the run game

All it took was a little creativity for Maryland to torch the Longhorns in the run game last week. The Terps took advantage of some over-pursuit by the Texas defense by repeatedly (and successfully) utilizing the jet sweep. Ultimately, Maryland only ran for 3.1 yards per carry, but was able to pick up some chunk yardage on the sweep plays.

In this aspect, Tulsa presents an interesting matchup. With an athletic, mobile quarterback in Luke Skipper, and several capable running backs behind him, the Golden Hurricane pounded the football in their week one victory over Central Arkansas, rushing for 297 yards on 63 attempts. With linebackers Gary Johnson, Anthony Wheeler, and Malcolm Roach expected to start as a unit for the first time this season, look for that group to realign the run defense in this coming week.

‘Next man up’ in the secondary

In the Week 1 loss, defensive back Brandon Jones shone through the poor display, arguably putting up the best performance of any Longhorn last week. He was all over, putting up several huge punt returns leading the defense with 10 tackles. However, Jones suffered an ankle injury late against Maryland, and coach Tom Herman said he would be “questionable” to go on Saturday.

Devante Davis and Kris Boyd join Jones in a banged-up secondary, as both senior defensive backs also suffered minor injuries in last week’s loss. If any of that trio is unable to play, it will likely thrust another freshman into the secondary, alongside first year safety Caden Sterns. For a secondary that had moments of inexperience on display a week ago, this Tulsa offense could be a more challenging task than expected.

Get the ball in the hands of playmakers

Wide receiver Collin Johnson has been known to make defenders look silly with the ball in the air. This ability was on display in week one, as the junior receiver made several acrobatic catches to begin the season. When a throw was remotely on target to Johnson, good things happened. But Johnson only touched the ball three times on the day, not near enough for the most electric playmaker on an offense desperately looking for a spark.

Junior receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey started his junior campaign off with a solid performance, catching six passes for 82 yards. Yet those two, as well as junior Devin Duvernay, all have game-breaking potential that was not utilized nearly enough against Maryland. Going up against a smaller, less athletic defense in week two, these key playmakers should use the matchup as a springboard to get the offense churning.
