Each week, six-man football insider Leman Saunders shares his news and notes from the Class 1A action across Texas. Be sure to follow Leman on Twitter @lemansaunders.

-McLean defeated Strawn handily in arguably the biggest game in the opening week.  McLean’s size up front just manhandled the Greyhounds and enabled RB Ben Crockett to log 177 yards, three TDs on 30 carries on the ground and haul in three passes for 89 yards and another TD receiving.  He also notched 8 tackles on defense.  The Tigers looked to be in midseason form and this victory was a complete team effort with linemen Kater Tate and Kade Reichman dominating the line of scrimmage all night.

-All the six-man newbies won their respective games and all in dominate fashion (save for Morton who really isn’t a six-man newbie having played some games last season).  Claude defeated Patton Springs 57-6; Perrin-Whit defeated Woodson 45-0; Leakey defeated Rochelle 57-0; Bronte defeated Rising Star 44-0.

-Borden County handled one of the best teams in the East as they muzzled the Union Hill Bulldogs 71-38 to win their 29th consecutive game.  Coyote kicker Cam Edwards capped of the scoring on the evening with a long 43-yard field goal worth 4-pts in six-man and a true rarity, especially one that long.

-Northside pulled off maybe the biggest upset of the opening week in class 1A defeating Throckmorton by a comfortable 28-point margin 62-34.  It is the first time in school history they have defeated Throckmorton on the gridiron.

-Cranfills Gap logged an impressive mercy rule victory over Mt. Calm 48-0.  It is the Lions first opening week victory since 2004.

-In the Odd Ball Files from week one you will find Bronte’s 44-0 halftime win over Rising Star, and Follett’s 12-0 win on the road over Moscow, Kansas.  Bronte’s victory was a halftime game as a truck crash caused a power outage in Rising Star and the two teams decide that 44 at halftime was just as good as 45.  Follett is a lightning rod (pun intended) once again this season as their game up in Moscow was called at halftime due to weather with the Panthers leading 12-0 (no it wasn’t a snow storm).  Follett had a similar thing happen last season that resulted in an official cancellation against White Deer, this time they drove home with the W.

-Examining the new rules: One of the first games of the season on Thursday featured a ref crew that apparently misinterpreted the 40 second play clock after touchdown and instead gave teams a 40 second clock after the PAT to kick off.  This caused many coaches to pull out their rule books and study them as it was a major change/factor in that game.  However, this was a non-issue the rest of the week as all other crews ran the clock correctly.  It is still something that coaches should keep a sharp eye on moving forward.
