SAN ANTONIO -- UTSA head coach Frank Wilson held his weekly media roundtable session on Monday following a 49-7 blowout loss to Herm Edwards and Arizona State in the season opener.

Wilson addressed the loss as well as what he expects from his team going forward into their home opener against Baylor.

Offensive Line

After looking at the stat sheet and seeing that the Arizona State defense had nine sacks and 15 tackles for a loss, the blame almost immediately goes to the offensive line. However, Wilson said the offensive line didn’t perform as bad as it was made out to be.

“You look at the nine sacks and that’s not something I’m looking at and labeling on the offensive line,” Wilson said. “Sometimes it was the quarterback holding on to it too long or escaping outside the confinement of the pocket…or even our running back getting pushed into the quarterback. Everyone had ownership in that.”

Wilson also addressed the importance of not getting too low after a blowout loss like the one suffered against Arizona State. The Roadrunners have play another Power 5 team next week, so it won't get any easier.

“We dealt with it, we’ve moved beyond it, and now we’re making preparations for Baylor.” Said Wilson. “It’s one game. There’s no alarm bells going off, there’s no panic, but we need to fix those things that we did not do well.”

Defensive problems

It seemed as if Arizona State was moving the ball at will all night long in the season opener. Wilson had a lot to say about his team’s defensive performance.

“Our defense was just not aligned properly and needs to tackle well. They (ASU) weren’t catching 80- yard bombs downfield, they were catching 5-10 yard passes and our guys just were not tackling,” Wilson said. “That’s fundamental but we’ll be better, we’ve owned it, identified it and started the process of correcting it.”

The Sun Devils posted more than 500 yards of offense in the opener, and scored touchdowns on six of their 11 drives. UTSA was virtually powerless to stop them. That has to change.

Looking ahead to Baylor

Baylor took on Abilene Christian in their season opener and won in a big way, putting up 606 yards of offense en route to a 55-27 victory. If UTSA wants a repeat of last season where they held Baylor to 10 points, the defense is going to have to play better.

“Baylor is a much-improved football team and a very talented team that continues to improve. We’ll have our task cut out for us,” said Wilson. “It’s so much about what we have to do and we need to fix the things that need fixing.”

UTSA held the Bears to just 274 total yards and 5.1 yards per pass attempt last season. However, the Roadrunners also lost several starters, including first round pick Marcus Davenport. The program will have to get back on track quickly to play against an improved Baylor squad.
