Week Ten in East/Central Texas

(Sunday, November 6th)
It's playoff time and it's when the mood around every fieldhouse changes, it's when the weather changes and sometimes can affect the outcome of a game, it's when hometown heroes are made and memories for a lifetime are created.
Well, the start of the playoffs around East and Central Texas have a long list of programs we've seen during this time many, many times before…some who've won multiple state championships and spent many a year playing well past Thanksgiving and right into Christmas weekend.
But, perhaps it's the sign of the times or the times are a changing, but we have a lot of "newbies" who will play past the regular season for the first time in a long time. And, in no particular order here are some great stories for programs who haven't tasted much success in their lifetime.
*Bobby Chadwick's Ore City Rebels are in the playoffs for the first time since 1995.
*Hughes Springs has been to the playoffs many times before, this will be their fourth trip in five years under head coach Chris Edwards, but this time around, they had to dig themselves out of an 0-5 non-district ditch to win a district championship. When I used that term in an email to Coach Edwards, he sent back, "I may want to use that term myself with our team."
*San Augustine won a Class 2-A State Championship in 2003 and they went to the playoffs against just three years ago, but---the Wolves just captured their first outright district championship in 36-years with their 40-35 win against New Waverly.
*I brought up Bullard's opportunity to make their first playoff appearance since 1993 last week, and Shannon Wilson's Panthers finished the deal with a 30-27 win against Rusk. It's Bullard's first playoff appearance since 1993 when Paul Rothwell was their head coach. Rothwell actually took the Panthers to four-consecutive playoff appearances from 1990-1993, but the Panthers haven't been back since--until now. When I sent a congratulatory email to Coach Wilson about 3:00am on Saturday morning, he responded, "thanks a bunch, these kids and coaches deserve it and I'm so glad that they and our community get to understand the experience." I couldn't believe Coach Wilson responded to a 3:00am email, but then again I'm sure he was replaying and breaking down one of the biggest win's in program history. Who can blame him?
*Pine Tree hasn't enjoyed many playoff appearances and their streak continues again after a 1-9 record this season, but the Pirates ended two streaks with a 28-21 victory over Marshall. The win helped the Pirates end a 16-game overall losing streak and a 26-game district losing streak. By the way, Pine Tree's last playoff appearance came in 2001.
*One of the great stories this past weekend was Killeen Shoemaker ending their 31-game losing streak with a 32-24 victory against Killeen Ellison. Channon Hall is in his first year as head coach at Shoemaker and Wolves senior linebacker Jammie Blunt told the Killeen Daily Herald after the game, "We finally got it…nobody can talk about us no more --- we stopped it! We beat it! Class of 2012, we beat it baby, yes!"
Shoemaker has come close to breaking the losing streak on several occasions this season and they finally finished it, and good Jammie Blunt and his teammates and Channon Hall and his coaching staff.
*Congratulations to Patrick Harvell at Corsicana Mildred. The Eagles shutout Lone Oak, 42-0, to wrapup their first-ever unbeaten regular from records that date back to 1932. Mildred has five shutouts this season and they outscored their district opponents 295-6.
*Chapel Hill won a Class 4-A State Championship in 1989 and they played for a state championship (losing to Henderson) last December, but their dominating 64-7 rout of Athens on Friday finished off their first-ever unbeaten regular season at 10-0. Pretty amazing considering they lost their star quarterback Avery Saenz for several weeks, along with a few other key starters for a game here and there. Saenz returned for the Bulldogs in their win against Athens.
*Head Football Coach Lance Connot led Detroit to their first district championship since 1999, and they get a first-round bye to boot.
*It wasn't too long ago when Oakwood went through back-to-back losing seasons and a combined 0-18 record. It was 20-years ago when fiery Ronnie Pat Durham led the Panthers to the Six-Man State Championship game in 1991, losing to Memphis 21-14. Durham's Panthers were 13-1 and 12-3 in back-to-back seasons, but Mike Heckathorn just led the Panthers to their first-ever unbeaten regular season.
*But, despite anything I've written, none of the programs mentioned have ever suffered through the futility of Alba-Golden. In fact, Alba-Golden has been synonymous with losing football. Not anymore…these Panthers ended a long drought of non-playoff teams. Gary Schultz has a knack for rebuilding programs in disarray, but he has to be considered for Coach of the Year for what he's done at Alba-Golden.
Consider this, the Panthers have two (2) playoff appearances since the program began in 1984, and the Panthers have suffered through seven (7) winless seasons, including five times since 2000 (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009), but Schulz has Alba-Golden in the playoffs for the first time since 1988 after their clutch 32-22 win against Scurry-Rosser. The Panthers enter the playoffs with a 6-4 record and that will clinch their second winning record---ever.
Alba-Golden's previous two playoff appearances occurred under Danny Baker (6-6) in 1984, and under Mike Maddox (6-5) in 1988.
On a side note, Maddox just led Grace Community to their first ever district championship in TAPPS, Division II, District 2.
Once again, thanks to anyone who has the time to read my weekly blog, I hope it's stuffed with plenty of food for thought, knowledge and information.
