Week One in East/Central Texas

So, I'm driving back home after watching Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears stun T.C.U. on Friday night and I get an email that I just know was wrong. It was a high school football fan in deep southeast Texas telling me a player from Hemphill rushed for 534-yards against West Sabine.

I didn't have the all-time single-game rushing list in front of me but I do remember Darryl Ellis of Somerville ran for a state-record 588-yards against Thrall in 1998.

I just wasn't sure if the stats on Twine were correct and if they were, where did it rank among the all-time list for rushing yards in a single game?

Well, enter Hemphill head football coach Ken Stanley. I'm sure he wanted to know who was this insane person blowing up his phone with a text message well past 1:00am on a Saturday morning. That would be me.

I couldn't help it.

I thought perhaps Coach Stanley was still watching film of this once-in-a-lifetime performance and just hadn't had the time to leave the fieldhouse.

Coach Stanley sent me back a text that his sophomore quarterback Justin Twine actually rushed for 459-yards, not 534-yards, but that in itself was still very special. It just wasn't threatening a state record. (Note: the official stats, confirmed by Stanley at a later date, do stay at 534 yards, second all-time).

Coach Stanley and I kept trading text-messages until I think the last one said, "I'm really not sure, I'm kind of tired."

That's when I knew it was time for me to get some sleep and work on this again on Saturday morning.

When Coach Stanley confirmed the official stats, I started reflecting back on some of the great running back's I've covered throughout 31-years in broadcasting, Michael Horace (Groveton), Rodney Thomas (Groveton), Derek Farmer (Tyler Lee), Jorvorskie Lane (Lufkin), Decori Birmingham (Atlanta), Tommy Palmer (Gilmer), Denvis Manns (Lufkin), Curtis Burns (Atlanta), Nate Jeffery (Caddo Mills), Adrian Peterson (Palestine), Ivory Lee Brown (Palestine), Dwight Smith (Carthage), Kris Briggs (Carthage), Jessie Harrison (Paul Pewitt), LaMichael James (Liberty-Eylau), Traylon Shead (Cayuga), Cody Glenn (Rusk), Keyou Craver (Harleton), Bill Jones (Corsicana), Lennon Creer (Tatum), Justin Johnson (Gilmer), Bryce Beall (Tatum), Roddrick Muckelroy (Hallsville), Rodney Jones (Pine Tree), Matthew Tucker (Chapel Hill), Tony Jeffery (Gladewater), Bennie Jones (Van), Jermie Calhoun (Van), Ryan Young (Alba-Golden and Sulphur Springs), Phoenix Owens (Carlisle), Odell Beckham (Marshall), Fred Thacker (Alto), Kendall Hunter (John Tyler), Chris Whaley (Madisonville), Korey Sutton (Texas High), KoKo Smith (Daingerfield), Jamario Thomas (Spring Hill), Edwin Simmons (Hawkins), Joe Johnson (Longveiw), Tyrone Ross (Tyler Lee), E.D Jackson (Kilgore), Cary Brabham (Hughes Springs), Fred Talley (Longview), Ted Burns (Pittsburg), Vondrell McGee (Longview), Keith Gilliam (Kilgore)...okay, I better stop now because I will go on forever and I know I've forgotten someone or fifty.

I started thinking about the great names who put up silly rushing numbers from even before I began my broadcasting career, Earl Campbell, Billy Sims, David Overstreet, and none of them ever came close to anything crazy like Justin Twine against West Sabine.

Seriously, I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but take a trip down memory lane and it was about 1:00am this morning while I'm writing this blog those names started coming back to me.

What is it about 1:00am these days?

Out of all those incredible players, all running backs, and no one, no one had ever come close to what Hemphill sophomore Justin Twine accomplished last Friday against West Sabine.

And, he's not even a running back, he's a quarterback with blazing speed.

Twine didn't just break the hearts of West Sabine football fans on Friday night, he also broke the single-game Hemphill High School record of Jerron White (450-yards) in 1988 against Huntington.

We'll forever remember, Hemphill 77 West Sabine 56, Justin Twine, 21-carries for 534-yards and 6-TD's (three of them for 90-yards or longer), and even he even completed 2-3 passes for 53-yards and 1-TD.

When I received the official stats from Coach Stanley on Sunday evening, I put up the numbers on Twitter, the reaction was immediate, "Holy Smokes" and "Good Grief" and "Does anyone play defense anymore?" and "He'll be worth monitoring all year" and "Amazing" and "Holy Crap" and "Those stats are after two weeks, right?" and a few other quotes I can't repeat.

On the same weekend Aledo's great senior running back Johnathan Gray continued his march towards becoming the all-time leading scorer in Texas High School Football History, it was a young sophomore in Hemphill who stole the spotlight.

Thank you for your time and feel free to email me any comments and I will always respond.
