After every weekend of the Texas high school football season, visit this page to find out the candidates for the Player of the Week Award. This honor is awarded to the top performance of the week in Texas High school football. Voting will begin every Monday morning and close Friday at noon.
Week 8 Winner: Kerville Tivy QB Johnny Manziel
Kerrville Tivy quarterback Johnny Manziel had his best game of the season in a crucial District 27-4A matchup against Cibolo Steele.
Manziel passed for 319 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns to help Tivy escape with a 38-34 win.
Manziel's performance was huge because Steele running back Malcolm Brown had a big night of his own: 329 yards and four rushing touchdowns.
For the season, Manziel has rushed for 763 yards and passed for 1,329 yards. Tivy is now 4-1 in district play after starting the season 0-2.
Week 8 Candidates:
Quandre Diggs, Angleton QB/DB: Rushed for 210 yards and 1 TD, had eight tackles and an interception on defense, and forced a fumble on special teams.
Justin Garcia, Mission CB: Returned two interceptions for TDs of 56 and 21 yards in a 55-0 win over Roma.
Mason Hayes, Cedar Hill RB: Rushed for 267 yards and 4 TDs in a 66-31 win over Irving Nimitz.
Brian Hinojo, EP Riverside QB: Passed for 457 yards and 4 TDs and rushed for 72 yards in a 38-35 win over Horizon.
Beau LeFave, The Colony WR: Had 13 receptions for 202 yards and 2 TDs in a 14-10 win over Denton.
Jordan Leslie, Tomball WR: Caught 13 passes for 184 yards and 3 TDs in a 29-28 win over DeKaney.
Johnny Manziel, Kerrville Tivy QB: Passed for 319 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 105 yards and 3 TDs in a 38-34 win over Cibolo Steele.
Jordan Nix, Omaha Paul Pewitt DL: Had 22 tackles and 4 QB sacks in a 47-6 win against DeKalb.
Deauntre Smiley, Lufkin QB: Completed 19 of 19 passes for 239 yards and 3 TDs and rushed for 149 yards and 2 TDs in a 51-20 win over College Park.
Damian Willis, McKinney RB: Rushed for 325 yards and 3 TDs in a 49-35 win over Frisco Centennial.
