This season, each weekly winner will be automatically nominated for the Player of the Year award, presented with Cavenders, Wrangler and the Texas Bowl. Those candidates will be announced in Week 13, and voting for that award will continue until the end of the high school season.
Week 5 Winner: Josh Gatling, McAllen Rowe
McAllen Rowe quarterback Josh Gatling had an amazing game last Friday against rival McAllen, finishing with 310 rushing yards, 85 passing yards and six total TDs.
The Warriors needed everything Gatling gave them to escape with a 55-53 win. It was Rowe’s first win of the season and improved the Warriors to 1-1 in District 30-5A competition. It was also the first win for Rowe’s new coach, Paul Reyes.
Gatling’s biggest play came on a third-and-20 in the fourth quarter. Gatling took the snap and burst through the middle of the McAllen defense for a 68-yard TD run. That was Rowe’s final touchdown of the night and gave the Warriors a 55-46 lead.
McAllen actually scored the game’s first two touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead. But Gatling scored three consecutive touchdowns to give Rowe its first lead, 21-14.
McAllen Rowe returns to action tonight with a key 30-5A game against Donna.
